What is an Impact Wrench?

An impact wrench has been known to carry many names: impactors, torque gun, rattle gun, air wrench and air gun. How an Impact Wrench Works

Most impact wrenches are designed to use compressed air, but there are electric and hydraulic ones on the market. They are often referred to as pulse tools because of the precise torque output they offer for the job at hand. When in operation, the hammer or the rotating mass is controlled and accelerated by the motor and then connected to the anvil to create a high torque output. The tools do not create kick back for the user and are easy to handle and easy to use.

You can find a variety of sizes and styles from ¼" to 1" and in styles from inline, butterfly and pistol grips. There are manual impact wrenches available as well. They look similar to a fat screwdriver. At the end where you would normally find the screwdriver, there is an area where you can pop on screw bits and sockets.

You will find these tools in a variety of industrial settings and any mechanics shop you walk into will have one. Any project that requires a high torque output of power will require the use of an impact wrench.
