Audi 1.8t - Change ignition coil (VAG)

Ignition coil problems are somewhat common for the Audi A4 B6 and other VAG car  owners.

The symptom of a faulty ignition coil is lack of power, a car that shakes during acceleration and a flashing check engine light.

Changing an ignition coil yourself is easy but the diagnostic work requires a OBDII Code Reader*. Many usable code readers are available online and will most likely turn out to be a good investment.

Proceture

1. Connect your OBD2 code reader to the connection in your Audi. It is probably located above the clutch pedal.
2. Read the error codes stored in your car according to the manual of the code reader and write down the codes.
3. Erase all error codes.
4. Check in the manual of the code reader which ignition coil that is faulty.
5. Open the hood and remove the plastic cover on top of the engine by turning the three screws a quarter turn and lifting the cover straight up.
6. Localize the faulty ignition coil. Ignition coil number 1 is closest to the front of the car and ignition coil no 4 is closest to the windscreen.
7. Remove the cable from the ignition coil.
8. Remove the ignition coil by pulling it straight up.
9. Replace the ignition coil.
10. Connect the cable.
11. Put the plastic cover back.
12. Start the car and take a test drive.

*An OBDII code reader makes it possible for you to read and delete the error codes generated by your car when something has gone wrong. If you get a more advanced code reader you will also be able to get readouts from different systems in the car, for example manifold pressure and coolant temperature, although a basic model will be sufficient for most of us. OBDII readers can be found on ebay and your local car parts dealer.
