Plungers are a Useful Tool for Plumbing Problems

One of the most useful tools for plumbing emergencies is the plunger. Flat plungers can be used to loosen clogs in sink drains, and open-flange plungers work well on toilets. When you use a plunger, wear safety goggles to protect your eyes from any debris that might splash up — particularly if you've been using drain cleaner. Make sure there's enough water to cover the top of the plunger, and work the plunger up and down to force water through the pipes.

Noise-induced hearing loss occurs gradually which is why ear protection in a workshop is so important. Here are some different options for ear protection.

A sound level meter measures the loudness of a sound in decibels. You can get a simple sound meter to measure the loudness of tools in your shop. When Dr. Harkrider and host David Thiel measured the sound of a circular saw, the meter read 98 decibels. A cordless drill measured 80 decibels. A shop vacuum measured 84. Eighty decibels or less will not promote permanent hearing loss. You should wear hearing protection when using tools that measure over 80 decibels.

Ear Protection:

Disposable hearing plugs should be used only once. They are made from a variety of materials, the most common of which is foam. To put in a foam earplug, first roll the foam between your hands to make it thin. Then, take the plug in one hand and pull the top of your ear upwards with the other. This straightens the ear canal so that the plug can be worked into your ear. After doing that, hold it down for a few seconds. The plug should not hang out of the ear. Plugs must be placed properly to work correctly.

There are reusable earplugs that have plastic head bands to keep them on your head.

Earmuffs provide adequate ear protection if they are sealed around the ear. Glasses and hair can sometimes get in the way and prevent that from happening. Some people find earmuffs to be less comfortable than earplugs.

Plungers are a useful tool for plumbing problems, but there are other tools that can come in handy during such emergencies.

Another handy plumber's tool is the snake. The snake is coiled inside the housing and can be extended for several feet. To use the snake, push the extension piece into the drain until it reaches the obstruction, and lock it in place with the setscrew. Then hold the pistol grip steady, and turn the handle to rotate the extension. You may need to rotate the extension piece to force it past bends in the pipes. For toilets, consider a closet snake, which has a curved end to help send it through the curves in the toilet drain.

For clogs in larger pipes, you might want to use a blow bag. A blow bag can be attached to a garden hose and then pushed into a drainpipe to the point of obstruction. When the water is turned on, the blow bag expands to fill and seal the pipe, and water pressure forces out the obstruction.

Some plugs are reusable. They come in different sizes and have different numbers of flange to give the best fit. Some of them have strings attached so they can be hung around the neck to keep them handy.
