Energy Solutions: Gas Heat Vs. Oil Heat
When it comes to heating your home, it's important to have options. You have options between buying from your regular Utility company or signing up with an energy service company. You also have the option of how you want your home to be heated; oil or gas. When moving into a new house, either a gas or oil tank is already in place but it's possible to change the system if need be. But should you change from one to another and which one suits you best?
The first thing you need to consider is what set up you have currently. Replacing an oil tank with a gas heating system and vice versa is more than possible, but can be pricey. You first need to decide if it's really feasible in your budget. If it isn't, then it's best to stick with what your house original has.
Natural gas is the most common method of heating homes in the United States as well as most of Europe. There are many pros and cons to natural gas. The positives are that it doesn't need to be stored on premise, which is why it's so easy to sign up with a natural gas supplier and just pay the bill. They bring the gas to you. It's also useful for multiple purposes, not just heating the home. Natural gas keeps a lot of your appliances going.
The cons are that it can be expensive if your home isn't insulated properly. You'll be wasting gas trying to heat up a room that has a draft. It also is explosive, although not as much as propane gas would be. And although it's fairly clean, it still produces carbon monoxide. There are also monthly fees, regardless of how much you use it in that time period.
Oil is less used at this point, but does have some pros. It's non-explosive and less likely to produce carbon monoxide, so from a safety stand point it's a great pick. There's also no monthly service fees for use.
The negatives are that it must be stored on site in an oil tank, which can be expensive and of course space consuming. It only works at about 85% maximum efficiency (as opposed to natural gas at 95%) and it can also potential contaminate the ground or water around the storage area. It is also more expensive than gas.
There isn't a wrong choice to make, it's just about weighing how much the pros and cons mean to you personally. Whatever you choose for your home, you will know what the best energy solutions are for your family.

Oil Power $29.2 PITMANS COMMON COMMODITIES AND INDUSTRIES OIL POWER SYDNEY -- PREFACE -- THE great expansion which has occurred in the adoption of oil for power production during the last few years appears to call for a work of small but comprehensive dimensions, which, while covering the scope of the subject in a general manner, does not aim at entering into great detail on its many and complicated aspects. It is believed, however, that the engineer, the ship- owner, and the industrial user of oil for power production, as well as for heating purposes, will find this modest a work of considerable utility. The economic advantages of oil as compared with coal have been fairly widely traversed under the respective adaptations, and these will be an admirable guide to those who are doubtful on this point. I have aimed at providing a concise treatise suitable both for the uninitiated and the experienced user, and have selected those data and descriptions which appear to me to fulfil this idea. S. H. N. These conditions have, how- ever, been responsible for the great extension which has occurred in the adoption of oil for power production and have brought the price of coal and oil into close approxi- mation. Indeed, if all the economic advantages attain- able by the use of oil be taken into consideration, the price of the latter is lower than that of coal when used in the internal combustion engine. This state of affairs has been an unprecedented opportunity for oil, and the great restriction in the supplies of coal compelled fuel users to resort to thht description of fuel of which large and comparatively cheap supplies are available. The relative position of these two forms of fuel at that time was such that it constituted a ser |

The former consists of a number of straight or slightly curved blades extending radIalIy from an axis as shown in Fig. 1. When the fan is in motion, the air in contact with the blades is thrown outward by the action of centrifugal force and delivered at the outer circumference or periphery of the wheel. A gartial vacuum is thus produced at the center of the wheel, and air from the outside flows in to take the place of that which has been discharged. Ffg. 3 illustrates the action of a centrifu gal fan, the arrows showing the path of the air. This type of fan is usually enclosed in a steel plate casing of such form as to provide Fig. 1. The discharge opening can be placed in any position desired, either up, down, top horizontal, bottom horizontal, or at any angIe. Another form of the centrifugal fail is shown in Fig 6. This fan is often made double by placing two wheels back to back and surrounding them with a steel casing in a similar manner to the one shown in Fig. 2. Cone fans are very efficient and are capable of moving large quantities of air at moderate sDeeds. Excerpt: Petroleum (L. petroleum, from Greek, literally "rock oil") or crude oil is a naturally occurring, flammable liquid consisting of a complex mixture of hydrocarbons of various molecular weights, and other organic compounds, that are found in geologic formations beneath the earth's surface. The term petroleum was first used in the treatise De Natura Fossilium, published in 1546 by the German mineralogist Georg Bauer, also known as Georgius Agricola. In its strictest sense, petroleum includes only crude oil, but in common usage it includes both crude oil and natural gas. Both crude oil and natural gas are predominantly a mixture of hydrocarbons. Under surface pressure and temperature conditions, the lighter hydrocarbons methane, ethane, propane and butane occur as gases, while the heavier ones from pentane and up are in the form of liquids or solids. However, in the underground oil reservoir the proportion which is gas or liquid varies depending on the subsurface conditions, and on the phase diagram of the petroleum mixture. An oil well produces predominantly crude oil, with some natural gas dissolved in it. ...More: http: //booksllc.net/?id=23195 |

Heating Services in Buildings: Design, Installation, Commissioning & Maintenance $58.24 Heating Services in Buildings Design, Installation, Commissioning and Maintenance David E Watkins Water based heating systems are efficient, flexible, versatile and offer many advantages over other heating systems. These advantages (fast response, good controllability, efficient zonal heating and largely silent operation) all require that initial design, installation, commissioning and maintenance be carried out to a high standard by competent engineers. "Heating Services in Buildings" provides the reader with a detailed and thorough understanding of the principles and elements of heating buildings using modern water based heating systems. A key theme of the book is that there is little difference, in the approach to the design and engineering, between domestic and commercial installations. The author's detailed but highly practical approach to the subject ensures there is sufficient information for students from both a craft background and those with more academic backgrounds to understand the material. This approach is complemented by straightforward, easy-to-use diagrams. "Heating Services in Buildings" supports a range of educational courses, including degree level building services engineering; NVQ Level 4 Higher Professional Diploma in Building Services Engineering; City & Guilds supplementary heating course and the Heating Design and Installation Course accredited by the European Registration Scheme (ERS). |
