Ryan Payton's Pleasure Pains is a book of poetry on all the different forms of love: unrequited love, love lost, loving from after, the pain in love and the pleasure in that pain. Poetry is an outlet whereby one's true emotions can be spilled onto paper; the poet is personal on so many levels, helping readers recognize the feeling of love as their own. Leonardo da Vinci's famous quote "Painting is poetry which is seen and not heard and poetry is a painting which is hear but not seen," is a fitting quote for this poetry compilation. The combination of stunning images, brilliant colors, and heart-wrenching prose brings to the life the images and experiences of those who are hopeless in love. Love, the author conveys through is poetry, can feel like paradise, but it can also hurt; either way, love will have an immense impact on your future, making Pleasure Pains a must read.

There are so many simple, yet profound poems that strike a chord and connect with the reader. My personal favorites are "Last Chance," "Embrace," and "Tears and Dreams of Love." Another poem with universal implications is a short poem titled "Work":

One day a week.

Not enough for my soul to keep.

Six days of hell.

One day to make it all well.

From the heartaches of love to love being portrayed as angelic, Pleasure Pains is therapeutic, for Payton as well as the readers, who are privileged enough to form a bond with the poet-a bond of love that ties together all forms of life on this planet. Juxtaposing strong dark colors with light radiant colors, Payton expresses a rainbow of emotions: treachery, betrayal, unfiltered pain, pining for the love that will never be, happiness, ecstasy, the agony of love, etc.

Reading this book of poetry once will undoubtedly give you pleasure however, each and every poem is special and must be read multiple times to extract the depths of raw emotion emanating from the pages.
