SAE J2534-1 is federally mandated specification that automakers in the United States must comply. The EPA mandate requires automakers to provide support to aftermarket repair shops. This support includes access to information and equipment necessary to reprogram any emissions related computer that can be reprogrammed by a new car dealership. This mandate took effect for all 2004 and newer vehicles. Many automakers have decided to offer support for vehicles as old as 1996.

J2534-1 is composed of two completely independent parts:

  • Subscription Software
  • A J2534-1 compliant interface

Subscription Software. The Subscription software comes directly from the automaker. This software comes in several variations:

  • Online software. With this type of software you simply log into the automakers site and reprogram the ECU. There is no software to download.
  • Downloaded software. With this type you download a program to your PC or laptop.
  • Hybrid online. Ford is an example of this type. You download the software but it simply interfaces with the Ford site for all reprogramming info.
  • CD or DVD. Many automakers such as Toyota and Volvo require you to order a CD or DVD. These discs include the current calibration files for their vehicles. They usually still require an internet connection during reprogramming though.

Hardware. The best part of the J2534-1 is that ECU reprogramming no longer requires OEM proprietary hardware. J2534-1 allows the aftermarket repair facility to cost effectively offer reprogramming on all makes and model while only needing to buy one interface. J2534-1 provides a standard that tool manufacturers can use to produce universal interfaces.

The Pass-thru interface is a box that connects between the OBD2 connector on the car and your PC. It is used to communicate the information between the PC and the ECU. Most new pass-thru devices will connect via USB. Some models offer ethernet or wireless such as bluetooth or 802.11. The wireless options seem to be gaining popularity as the price of these options gets lower. Using a wireless option is more convenient since you do not need to bring the computer to the car, you can leave it on your tool box or work bench. If you decide to go wireless I would recommend an interface that uses 802.11 instead of bluetooth. 802.11 offers faster data transfer and longer distances.

In addition to a J2534-1 compliant interface you will also need a PC or Laptop computer. Currently OEM Subscription Software is only compatible with Windows based computers. I would recommend that you run Windows XP if possible to ensure compatibility with the most automakers software. Windows 7 Ultimate looks to be very promising for compatibility since it offers "XP Mode" which essentially is XP running in a virtual machine. This would allow you to run the reprogramming software with Windows XP and allow you to run all other programs in Windows 7.

Choosing an Interface. There are many different interface on the market. You need to consider the manufacturers that you service the most when making this decision. All pass-thru tools should be the same but in reality not all devices are fully compliant with every manufacturer. Many automakers have tested and verified certain interface will work with their software. It is recommended that you check each automakers site for the interfaces that they have tested.

In addition to reprogramming, many tool manufacturers have included extra features with their tools. These features include generic scan tool software, enhanced manufacturer specific scan tool software and lab scope features.

We recommend the Blue Streak iflash interface. It is the lowest priced fully compliant interface available. It has been verified by several automakers to be compatible with their software.

One of the most exciting improvements in the automotive industry was the addition of the OBD (On Board Diagnostics). It is the computer that activates the vehicle's "CHECK ENGINE" light. OBD1 (OBD I) was designed to monitor manufacture-specific systems on cars from 1981 to 1995. Then came the development of OBD2 (OBD II), which is on all 1996 and newer cars sold in the U.S. Like it's predecessor, OBD2 (OBD II) was adopted as part of a government mandate to lower vehicle emissions. What makes OBD2 (OBD II) more unique is it's universal application for all late model cars and trucks both domestic and import. This sophisticated program in the vehicle's main computer system is designed to detect failures in a range of systems, and can be accessed through a universal OBD2 (OBD II) port, which is usually found under the dash. For all OBD systems, if a problem is found, the computer turns on the "CHECK ENGINE" light to warn the driver that there is something wrong and sets a DTC (Diagnostic Trouble Code) to identify where the problem occurred. A special diagnostic tool, such as the Actron PocketScan is required to retrieve these codes. It is a perfect unit for a starting point for repairs.
