It's a fact that gear wrenches are loved by most mechanics for a variety of reasons. Not only are they simple and easy to use but they're also extremely flexible and versatile. In terms of all of their types and varieties, there are at least several different kinds that can be had. Look at what the scope and complexity of the job will be before deciding just how many wrenches and wrench types will be needed. Many professional or serious amateur mechanics will have a number of different kinds, including locking flex head ratcheting sets and an S-reversible set or two.

Most mechanics shoot for at least one straight set, a locking flex head ratcheting set and a reversible set in order to cover all the bases. With these wrenches, it's possible to disassemble or assemble most anything that has bolts in it in a short amount of time. Look for a set that's finished off in polished chrome and is made of solid, cast metal, has a flexible head and thin profile and can be ratcheted with only five degrees of movement.

Nowadays, a set of gear wrenches can be found that comes in many different sizes, types and metals. Trying to save money by going with a bargain set bought at some department store in the discount aisle usually ends up costing money in the long run because they're made of cheap pot metal and not good cast metals. So don't be a cheapskate mechanic who ends up blaming his tools for his shortcomings.
