Cinema 4D - Splines and Precision Drawing

Splines are the skeleton structure of all your Cinema 4D objects. Using precision mapping will help you create and control depth, perspective, and realistic shapes. Using precise points, using a grid display with grid snapping are your primary tools for creating shapes of your own definition.

For a simple exercise in precision tools lets build a simple table with legs, using snapping for precision placement. This exercise will use fixed coordinates, multiple perspectives, and the helpful grid display. We will begin with splines taking advantage of the special spline effects available then extrude our shape to produce a table with some style.

For starters, be sure you have your grid turned on. There is an inset menu below the main menu, your 'viewport' located just above the stage. Under 'edit->configure->filter' you will see a set of primarily viewing options. Be sure the 'grid' option is checked. You will immediately see your grid appear and disappear checking this box.

Begin with a rectangle spline, 8 meters long by 4 meters wide. Change the plane perspective to 'XZ'. Convert your rectangle by selecting it, then entering the 'C' key. On your two new planes, adjust the 'Y' coordinate value. I chose.25 and.5 to raise each a bit evenly.

Now create a 'Loft Nurbs'. Nurbs are fun. Even the name takes us a bit into fantasy but 'Nurbs' actually stands for something: 'Non-uniform rational B-spline'. This acronym actually belongs to computer graphics modeling, not Cinema 4D and you can learn more about them at the wikipedia link I've included at the end of this article. With a nurbs model you travel from your two dimensional spline world to the world of 3-D.

Choose your three splines and drag them under your new loft nurbs making them children. Now render your project to see what you have created so far. You immediately see your tabletop, with precise dimension, and rich 3-D detail free 3d models. I usually add a special material to give any new object I create that extra touch of realism. The Cinema 4D library is rich indeed and its easy getting lost just experimenting but for my table I chose a marble finish 'Sancai' from the materials group. I couldn't resist looking this up and indeed this is an age old Chinese technique.

I'm drifting a bit here but the library of materials adds at least as much to your project as the mathematical dimension and drawing capability. When I apply this marble texture and render, I immediately see a table top that has varied color and texture like a true marble ceramic, a little class and culture free 3d models. Applying material instantly brings your objects to life.

It is quite easy to add some legs to our tabletop. Choose your top view for placing legs. Create a cube. Under 'Attributes->Object Properties', I used 1m in 'x' and 'y' dimensions. When you use the model tool (third from the top on your tool menu, on the far left in standard layout), then choose 'move' from the 'Attributes->Move' menu, the snap-settings are the third option on the right. Enable snap with the default settings. Now pick up your cube and move it to the upper left of your tabletop. You will see that is locks in place with snapping enabled. Now extend the height of you single cube. You may want to rename it 'leg1' at this point. Under object properties, I made my leg 2 meters tall then use the green adjustment arrow to move flush under the table. At this point use your 'right' and 'front' side view viewing options ('F3' and 'F4'). From these profile views you can see clearly that your legs just touch the bottom of your table free 3d models.

Back in your top view, drag your single leg to the upper left corner of our table. With snap settings enabled it should jump to the corner with even metrics (mine are 'X:-3.5', 'Z:1.5'). Now make three copies of your new leg. Individually, choose leg 1,2, and 3 and drag to the corners of your table. With snapping enabled, they should lock nicely in place with the correct height set from your first cube model. Perhaps add a slightly different ceramic material to your legs for a bit of offset and there you have it, an attractive table with precision dimension using splines and of course, 'nurbs'.
