Three Main Types Of Safety Glass

Ordinary glass breaks into very sharp pieces. Safety glass is designed so that it is less likely to break, and when it does so the consequences are less serious. There are three main types: toughened, laminated and wired. Plastic can also be used.

Most toughened glass (sometimes called tempered glass) is produced by special heal treatment of ordinary (annealed) glass, and when it breaks it crazes into lots of tiny fragments. Because the surface of toughened glass is very hard, it is not possible to cut it, make holes in it or carry out any 'edge work¬ing' once it has been toughened. Ordering toughened glass may take a few weeks and you can expect to pay about twice the price of the equivalent size of ordinary glass. Toughened glass is up to five times stronger than ordinary glass and can be used for internal doors, door side panels, low-level glazing, balustrades and shower screens and, because it is heat resistant, it is ideal for table tops.

In laminated glass, two or more panes of ordinary glass are interleaved with a layer or layers of plastic. When laminated glass breaks, the glass sticks to the plastic layers and so is much less of a hazard than ordinary glass. It is possible to make laminated glass that is extremely tough and, in the home, it can be used for the same risk areas as toughened glass, but has the advantage that it provides added security since it is almost impossible to penetrate, even when broken. You will probably have to order laminated glass - expect to pay nearly twice the price of ordinary glass. It is possible to cut and shape laminated glass, but it is a skilled job which is probably best left to the glass merchant.

The third type of safety glass wired glass is made by fusing together two layers of glass with a welded wire mesh sand¬wiched between them. Unlike the plastic layer in laminated glass, the wire mesh does not make the glass any less likely to break, but it docs hold the glass pieces together when it does. Its main use is to act as a barrier against flames and smoke in the event of a fire - it has a one-hour fire rating. It can also be used for skylights where ordinary glass could constitute a hazard for those below. The usual thickness for Georgian wired glass is 6mm (Georgian wired glass has a mesh of small squares as opposed to the chicken wire type). For rough cast wired glass, which provides a degree of privacy, you can expect to pay about as much as ordinary 6mm glass; for polished wired glass, which is clear, you can expect to pay at least twice as much. Wired glass can be cut, but again it is probably a job best left to a glass merchant.

There are several types of plastic which can be used for glaz¬ing. These include acrylic, polystyrene, polycarbonate and rigid PVC sheet. All are lighter than glass and resistant to impact especially polycarbonate but they may not be as clear or free from distortion. To make existing glazing safer, you can stick special plastic safely film to it, after thoroughly cleaning the surface.
