The Retro Wall Setup: A Vintage Display System

Slatwall is an attractive and helpful way of displaying goods in a retail environment, so much so that it has even begun to be used for home storage. Yet with its great popularity it is becoming so ubiquitous that retailers have begun to become concerned that it is too ubiquitous and too prevalent in shops, to the extent that they are opting for the retro wall system, permanent shopfittings that cannot be altered or improved easily. Yet can a permanent system such as this really compete with the versatility of slatwall?

It is important to remember that, as slatwall also makes the retro wall system, the pair can be combined, so it is possible to have a permanent set of shopfittings combined with slatwall panelling, giving the retailer the best of both worlds; not only can they have the unchanging fittings, but they are also able to jazz up their displays by regularly changing the slatwall, and by doing so, can keep the shop looking new and regularly updated.

These permanent fittings can also give a shop an air of prestige; they look as if they are established and exclusive, with a sense of permanence hinting to customers that the goods on offer are of high quality - high enough to remain both popular and in demand for a long time, so the customers will be confident in buying the wares, thus helping the retailer and its goods to become then remain popular and in demand. Larger chains and successful independent shops can certainly benefit from the retro wall system.

However, it could easily harm smaller or less well-established retailers; as the retro wall system does not have the versatility of slatwall, and cannot be easily altered, it could see a shop display seeming dull and outdated after a length of time, thus prompting the need for a change in the shop's fittings. This, of course, will not come cheap; the least costly retro wall panels will still cost around £60, and the most expensive will set shop owners back around £120, so choosing the retro wall system really is a big commitment for smaller shops to make. Only retailers who are opening shops where they are certain of a high level of demand should consider the retro wall system, as slatwall, which may not create the same impression of class and exclusivity, can still be a cheaper option, and is easily changed at a much less prohibitive cost.

Furthermore, if demand soars, and a shop is successful enough that it can expand its range of goods on sale, the slatwall system is much easier to alter to fit in more products, more shelving and more hanging space, so the retro wall fittings could actually hinder a shop's plans for expansion. Of course, such success could make it easy to afford new fittings, but the slatwall could be changed cheaply, thus maximising profits. Therefore, while the retro wall system will make a shop look both exclusive and attractive, it is a permanent display system, which does not allow much room for change. So a good system, but one best left to larger and better established retailers.
