Prepping Walls for Wallpaper
Like any venture or project, prepping a wall for a major or minor overhaul needs time and careful preparation. If the project you have in mind is plastering your walls with home wallpaper and wallpaper borders, you have a lot of things to consider such as the type of surface your walls have, and the theme or look you want to accomplish. Wall murals should also work well with the various wall surfaces throughout your home.
Before deciding what pattern of wallpaper you want to order, ask your local wallpaper store for at least 2 swatches and decide which pattern fits your home or room best. When placing an order, make sure you order an extra roll or two for future use, such as repairs and minor installations. The number of rolls you need will depend on the square footage of your room, so measure each room beforehand.
Once your order arrives, inspect it immediately. Take note of the lot number and the quantity of your order. Check the color pattern and match them with the sample that you have. You must also inspect if the coloring on every roll is even (some might have faded) and if there is any damage to any of the rolls’ edges. It is imperative that you check for flaws before actually using the home wallpaper and wallpaper borders.
You can only achieve the best effects with wallpaper borders and wall murals if they are installed properly. To do that, the walls must be fully prepared. Removing old wallpaper, smoothing the walls’ surface and priming it with the right paint, and filling any cracks and holes are necessary steps in making the new wallpaper bond perfectly to the wall.
For walls that are covered in non-gloss paint, it is necessary to have the paint scraped or sanded off. After the paint is removed, wash the wall with an all-purpose cleaner. After the wall has dried, apply an acrylic primer. You can then proceed to installing your home wallpaper and wall murals.
For walls that are painted with semi- or high-gloss paint, they should be covered with acrylic primer.
For mildew-plagued walls, a wash down with a mixture of bleach and water is recommended to clean the surface. After the walls are cleaned, rinse thoroughly, dry well, and then apply the primer.
Wood-paneled walls covered in gloss must be washed thoroughly with a mixture of de-glossing solution and water. It must then be sanded smooth. Vertical grooves must be filled with spackle. You can then apply the primer and hang the wall mural or wallpaper border of your choice.
There are a few tools necessary for a smooth installation process:
• Steel tape measure – for measurement purposes;
• Water tray – if using pre-pasted wallpaper, dip the strips in the trough to prime the adhesive;
• Seam roller – tool used to flatten the wallpaper’s surface;
• Razor knife with lots spare blades – used to cut strips of wallpaper;
• Pencil – used to mark specific points on the wallpaper;
• Bucket and sponge – washing and wiping purposes;
• Ladders - helps you reach those high places.
Be sure you have these tools ready as they will definitely come in handy as you do your wallpaper project. Preparing a wall may take half a day, but the end result is surely worth it. Home wallpaper that is perfectly installed is sure to enhance and liven up any room.

Pre-Raphaelite Painting And Nineteenth-Century Realism (Hardcover) $277.18 Marcia Werner challenges several long-standing beliefs about the Pre-Raphaelite painting movement, often characterized as a disparate group who pursued divergent, even antithetical goals. Werner argues that the Pre-Raphaelites developed and shared an artistic philosophy comprehensive enough to embrace all of their differences. She reconstructs this credo through careful study of writings by Pre-Raphaelite artists. |

Painting Explained $28.66 A common lament among artists is that there are no books available that give specific, practical information about the procedures used by those creative geniuses collectively known as the Old Masters. The reason for this dearth is that such a work's author would have to possess extraordinarily wide-ranging expert knowledge and skills. Thomas Gullick's credentials indicate a great capability in taking up this challenge. He was a professional artist and scholar living in the mid-19th century, and so was in an exemplary position to discuss the intricacies of traditional techniques, and to compare modern systems to the styles and methods of previous eras. The book's exceptionally insightful combination of art history, aesthetic theory and erudite analysis made it highly regarded at the time, and it was given as a prize for outstanding achievement at the Royal College of Art in London. In this important new edition, with a newly compiled comprehensive index, Gullick authoritatively covers the aims and objectives the artist should have when interpreting reality, with stress laid on accuracy of detail, depth and transparency. Apropos of these principles, he skilfully discusses the surprisingly complex theories of art that existed in ancient times, including that of the Egyptians, Assyrians, Greeks, Etruscans, and Romans. Also, the spiritual features of Christian Medieval art are explored, as are the distinctive traits of the national schools of Italy, Germany, the Low Countries, and England. Of particular value to the working artist are the detailed sections dealing with technical issues of pre-modern forms of painting, many of which are poorly understood today, but that could, if used, greatly facilitate and expand the range of visual expression. The reader will learn about various physical processes such as encaustic, mosaic, tempera, fresco, oil and miniature painting. There is also a wealth of knowledge pertaining to implements, vehicles, varnishes, grounds, colours, subjectiles (i.e. supports), chemical formulations, the arrangement of the work-room and studio, and much more. Despite the sophisticated nature of the material, the author does not neglect the human dimension, for he cites pertinent facts, as well as witty anecdotes, from the life stories of many well-known and not so well-known artists. |

The New Painting of the 1860s: Between the Pre-Raphaelites and the Aesthetic Movement $80.15 This handsome volume is the first authoritative survey of one of the most intriguing periods of British art--the radically innovative decade of the 1860s. The book explores new developments in English painting of this period, focusing on the early work of Edward Burne-Jones, Frederic Leighton, Albert Moore, Edward Poynter, Simeon Solomon, and James McNeill Whistler, as well as on paintings by Frederick Sandys and the older G. F. Watts, and by Dante Gabriel Rossetti and his Pre-Raphaelite colleagues Holman Hunt and John Everett Millais. Allen Staley argues that engagement in the decorative arts, particularly by Burne-Jones, Moore, and Poynter at the outset of their careers, led to a transcending of traditional expectations of painting, making abstract formal qualities, or beauty for beauty's sake, the main goal. Rather than being about what it depicts, the painting itself becomes its own subject. "The New Painting of the 1860s" examines the interplay among the artists and the shared ambitions underlying their works, giving impetus to what would soon come to be known as the Aesthetic Movement. |

Painting Today (Hardcover) $110.58 Not only is this book an overview of contemporary painting, it is also an enquiry into how we experience its images, what they mean and why the practice remains vital. The venerable art of painting still thrives as a leading force in the art market. PAINTING TODAY explores the development of the medium, especially through the last forty years, and the diversity of paintings now being made internationally.Critics have suggested that painting lost its way in the second half of the twentieth century. Indeed, the innovations of photography, film, video, installation art and other developments certainly threatened painting`s pre-eminence. Yet paintings still command huge prices on the market and artists are using the medium in flourishing numbers. In PAINTING TODAY we see how these other art forms have inspired the development of painting techniques and styles, and include hundreds of important works by well-known painters, paintings by artists better known in other media, and very new works by painters just establishing their careers. |

Painting Maya Universe-P $30.68 Lavishly illustrated with nearly 400 color images, "Painting the Maya Universe" is the most thorough study and brilliant display of Classic Maya ceramic painting yet published. Building on twenty years of research and debate, Dorie Reents-Budet and her collaborators Joseph W. Ball, Ronald L. Bishop, Virginia M. Fields, and Barbara MacLeod bring together many perspectives, including the art historical, archaeological, epigraphical, and ethnohistorical, to examine one of the world's great but overlooked painting traditions. With an emphasis on sixth- to eighth-century pottery featuring both pictorial and hieroglyphic imagery, "Painting the Maya Universe" presents an extraordinary exploration of the cultural roles and meanings of these Guatemalan, Belizean, and Mexican elite painted ceramics. Maya pottery is discussed both in aesthetic terms and for the important information it reveals about Maya society, artistry, politics, history, religion, and ritual. The range of ceramic painting styles developed during this period is also presented and defined in detail. "Painting the Maya Universe" is the first publication to present a definitive translation of the hieroglyphic texts painted on these objects. With many glyphs deciphered here for the first time, this analysis reveals much about how these vessels were perceived and used by the Maya, their owners' names, and, in several cases, the names of the artists who created them. This information is combined with archaeological and other data, including nuclear chemical analyses, to correlate painting styles with specific Maya sites. Published in conjunction with Duke University Museum of Art and an exhibition touring the United States, "Painting the Maya Universe" presents an astonishing visual record as well as a monumental scholarly achievement. With photographs by Justin Kerr, the foremost photographer of pre-Columbian art, it includes over 90 unique full-color rollout photographs, each showing the entire surface of an object in a single frame. The book also addresses the questions and controversy regarding the loss of information that occurs when objects are removed from their archaeological context to become part of public and private collections. "Painting the Maya Universe" will energize discussion of Maya pottery, hieroglyphic texts, and iconography. Its photographs, a lasting resource on this great painting tradition, will stimulate and delight the eye. It is a breakthrough in art history and Latin American scholarship that will enrich general readers and scholars alike. |
