Recently I started working on a copywriting project for a busy professional. His current website was created by a development company that had disappeared … taking along all his domain registry info.

It's a true story. We want to move his DNS pointers so he can get a new web host. The developer bought hosting under his own name and credit card.

My client wants to keep his domain name. He has no record of PIN numbers, passwords or even a 4-digit code for a Visa card

This story is not at all uncommon. The domain registry was not a bit surprised. "We hear this every day," they said.

Let's give these developers the benefit of the doubt. They expected to be around forever. They wanted to spare their clients the details.

But anybody can get hit by a bus, move, change careers or ... you name it.

Therefore, when you embark on a web development project, stay in control. If at all register your domain name yourself. Sign up for your own hosting. If your developer offers a bundle - template, hosting, and domain name - recognize that you are seeing a big red flag. You rarely save money and you take a big risk if you decide to change any component of the package. I've met many business owners who simply outgrew their first website. They needed more than a simple template, but everything was bundled. You can spend a fortune trying to untangle these services.

-- Make sure you to keep in a safe place your domain name registrar, login and password. Keep the email address you used to sign up and make a note of the credit card.

Most important, don't wait for delivery of your website. Ask about these items before you sign on the dotted line.
