Feed Screws | Make Your Production Line More Productive

The same piece of equipment, as small as a baby's pinky finger, can be found in every household around the world today.  These tiny things are used to hang picture frames on walls, hold pieces of wood together, and shockingly enough they are used to hold fractured bones together.  This tiny tool is know as the screw.

Around the 7th century BC, screw technology was used as part of a screw pump which was used to water the Hanging Gardens of Babylon (the same technology can be found in a prototype artificial heart which in turn removes the human heartbeat along with their pulse).  Basically as the screw turns it pushes the water through a tunnel that encloses the screw.  Metal screws as we know today didn't appear until the 15th century.

The packaging industry still uses the screw for the same purpose, propulsion, as the Babylonians did thousands of years ago.  This screw design they use for this purpose is called a timing screw or a feed screw.   These screws are commonly found in conveyor systems where they feed the products into the different machines along the production line.

There are two types of feed screws in the packaging industry; a quick change feed screw and a dedicated feed screw.

Dedicated Feed Screws: Certain machines may only have one specific job for only one product that normally remains the same shape and size throughout the product life cycle.  In this case, a dedicated feed screw is appropriate to send products down the production link and never need to be replaced.

Quick Change Feed Screw: In order to save time and money so packaging companies use the same machines to package different products.  These products may not always be the same size or shapes therefore parts of the machine need to be changed.  These quick change feed screws provide less down time between conversions and simple installation allowing for optimal savings and production.  These screws can be color coded to assist the quick easy change between product productions.

This industry is very demanding for accuracy and timing and that the production line runs as safely and smoothly as possible.  Feed screws can be customized to fit different machine needs such as to halt or position containers while acting as a line control device.  They also divide or combine, accelerate or decelerate the container flow.  They can be mounted on top of each other to increase stability of odd shaped containers or bottles, such as those with multiple cross sections.

It is important to understand that these feed screws are just as complicated as the rest of the machinery involved.  If not designed correctly they have the potential to screw up the rhythm of the entire assembly line.  Custom feed screw designers have the knowledge and expertise to manufacture such equipment.
