About Paintless Dent Repair
Paintless dent removing is increasingly becoming popular day by day as it is not only a time saving technique, but is also cost effective and efficient. These techniques are the best solution for minor dents and actually result in your car looking brand new. Even a trained eye will not be able to detect where the dented area was.
One of the most common reasons why PDR is used is to repair hail damage, minor body creases, door dings and minor bumper indentions. This technique can also be used to help prepare the damaged panel for paint repair. In such cases it is referred to as push-to-paint or push-for-paint. One of the limiting factors that ails PDR is that it cannot be used for paint repair and the amount of metal that can be stretched by the incurred damage. And so many times sharp dents and creases may not be repairable at least not without a paint job.
In the recent years there has been a conscious effort to bring a standard to this trade and even The National Alliance of Paintless Dent Repair Technicians (NAPDRT) was formed in 2006. The mission of this organisation is to educate consumers and to enhance the industry standards through third party certification and mutual accountability. To date however there is no industry wide certification process in the field of Paintless Dent Repairs.
Methods of Repair:
One of the most common methods of paintless dent repair is to utilise body picks and metal rods to push the dent out from the inner side of the panel that is being repaired. Also glue might be used from the exterior of the panel in order to pull the dents out. In either of the cases fine tuning of these repairs requires “tapping” down the repair in order to remove the small high spots so as to make the surface flat. PDR may use both steel and aluminium panels.
Fluorescent lighting or in some cases even light reflection boards are used to see the shadows that are created by the deformation of the dent. This is an extremely important aspect of the repair process as without the paintless dent repair light or the reflector board the fine detail of the process is unseen and the technician then cannot choose their tool specifically and repair the damage effectively.
The process of paintless dent repair needs the technician to specifically push the metal in the exact location to a precise height which can be seen or witnessed with a PDR reading instrument such as the PDR reflector board or the PDR light.
