Painting Tools To Help You Paint Like A Professional!

As a painting contractor, I have spent many years refining my techniques. These five simple tools will help any homeowner tackle their home interior painting projects.

A clean, empty 5-gallon bucket.

Don't bother with that silly little pan the store wants to sell you. A clean, five gallon plastic bucket holds more paint, is less likely to spill, and has a convenient handle for you to haul it around. Intermix one or two gallons in your bucket and you're ready to paint.

A metal roller grid.

This hangs nicely inside your bucket. Simply dip your roller (with extension handle attached; see next item) into the paint at the bottom of your bucket and roll up and down the grid a few times to remove the excess. When done with your project, let the paint dry on it and you can use it again and again.

An adjustable roller handle.

Spend the money on a sturdy 2-4 foot adjustable fiberglass handle. Preferably one with a threaded end. Unless you are in a tight space, always have this attached to your roller frame. Aside from the extra reach, the longer, thick handle, is easier to grip, allows for less bending to load your roller, and gives you much more leverage when applying paint to the wall. A great deal easier on your muscles!

A sturdy roller frame.

Pay the extra couple of bucks and get a heavy-duty roller frame. Flimsy rollers will bend after a short amount of use. Making it difficult to roll in a straight line. A sturdy roller will provide a professional finish and years of use.

A quality larger brush.

Afraid you are going to get paint all over your ceiling or trim with a brush that's too big? Think again. The short learning curve to handling a larger brush is well worth the time. I recommend a 3" angled sash brush for most homeowner's interior wall-painting needs. Larger brushes hold more paint for fewer trips to your paint pot and allow you to "cut-in" in longer strokes. Think of it like riding a bicycle. It's much easier to ride in a straight line going fast with large wheels, than riding slowly with small wheels.

As an interior painter of many years, I know painting is mostly labor. It's an exersise in physics. The more efficiently you can deliver paint from the can to the wall, the easier your project will be. The easier it is, the higher the quality!

Wash your tools immediately after use. You spent the extra money on them, you'll want them to last.
