Small-Scale Turbulence and Mixing in the Ocean $272 This volume contains the proceedings of the 19th International Liège Colloquium on Ocean Hydrodynamics, the programme of which focused on the relationships between small-scale mixing and large-scale features, transports and processes. The presentation of papers on various methods of parameterization of small-scale turbulent mixing for numerical ocean models was particularly encouraged and this resulted in more than a third of the papers presented at the Colloquium dealing in one way or another with the parameterization problems; many of these papers demonstrate the direct results of modelling. These proportions are well reflected in this volume of proceedings and thus emphasize once more the importance of small-scale turbulence research for such vital practical applications as ocean modelling and forecasting. |

Colour Mixing and Paint Work $33.29 PREFACE THE object of this small book is to provide a much-needed manual for painters, signwriters and decorators. It is, in fact, a handy book of reference for the practical man, the art student, and those connected in any way with paints and painting. The book will appeal alike to skilled workman and novice. A working knowledge of the mixing of paint is fully given. This is essential for the man who mixes his own paints, and it cannot fail to be of great interest to those who buy paint already mixed. The whole art and science of colour mixing has been clearly and concisely set out. Much work has been devoted to the chapters on this subject, owing to its very great importance. And, lastly, an appendix of useful tables has been added. These cannot fail to be of sterling value to the reader. During sever a1 years at Cambridge University, the writer has studied the chemistry of paints and their reactions with one another from the scientific point of view. However, no mention has been made of chemical formul, the subjectmatter being treated in such a way as to be easily understood by the lay mind.Paint is a solid powder mixed with a liquid. The solid is called the Pigment and the liquid the vehicle. It is obvious from the start that the application of a dry powder as a means of colouring is absurd and impracticable, and it is necessary to have a vehicle to bin the powder together before it can be applied. Vehicles.-The liquid generally used is linseed oil, which is obtained from flax seeds. The raw oil dries slowly, to form a hard film. Boiled oil - is oil to which a substance, known as a drier, has been added to hasten the formation of the hard film or drying. The linseed oil combines withtheoxygenof theairtoformthisfilm. The dryer, acting on the air, more readily combines with oxygen, which it afterwards imparts to the C.M. I B 2 COLOUR MIXING oil. In this way the drying of the paint is hastened. The addition of too much drier may have the effect of over-oxidation of the oil, which impairs the toughness and elasticity of the paint. Slow drying paints are the most durable, consequently it is impracticable to use much drier. Not more than 5 to 10 per cent. should be added per gallon. Drier should never be added to already mixed paints, as these are sold ready for use. Turpentine the essential oil of is often used for thinning paint on account of its properties. It is a colourless, volatile, inflammable liquid, and is lighter than water, mixing freely with oil. The effect of turpentine in paint is to produce a flat surface-that is to say, a surface that is not glossy. This effect is sometimes sought as a finish, but more often it is used as a primer coat of paint, over which the final coat is laid. Paint will stick better to this flat surface than to a shiny one. Turpentine would seem to interfere with the uniting of oil with the pigments, and for this reason it is essential that, if turpentine is to be added, it should be added after the oil and pig |

Mixing of Rubber $81 Since the discovery of vulcanisation in the nineteenth century, rubber has been a major industrial product. From its inception, the use of vulcanising agents, reinforcing fillers and other additives has been a major feature of the rubber industry. Innumerable articles and texts attest to the chemist's skill in balancing the chemical and physical properties of the manufactured products. In most cases, experimenters have been concerned with how recipe changes affect the product properties while the physical processes which formed the test specimen are not considered. For the rubber processor, however, it is these mechanical operations which form the heart of his business. The equipment needed for plant- scale production requires millions of dollars of capital investment. In the highly competitive rubber industry, the ability to save two or three cents per pound of product through better design or more efficient operation of mixing equipment can make a tremendous difference in the profitability of a company. Despite the commercial importance of the process, no comprehensive analysis of rubber mixing, considered as a unit operation, is currently available. This monograph is designed to fill that gap in the arsenal available for problem solving by the production engineer or the machine designer.Mixing as a general operation may be considered as three basic processes occurring simultaneously. Simple mixing ensures that the mixture has a uniform composition throughout its bulk, at least when viewed on a scale large compared to the size of the individual particles. In the case of solids blending (Chapter 11), the particle size need not change, but the distribution of particles throughout the mixture approaches a random distribution. If the shear forces are sufficiently large, particles may fracture, as in dispersive mixing, and the polymer may flow, as in laminar mixing (Chapter 111). In both of these processes, the size of the original particles or fluid elements changes because of the mixing process. Then the properties of the mixture depend upon the size of the basic structures reached during mixing. In the case of laminar mixing, the size may be the striation thickness of a hypothetical fluid element, which is inversely related to the total shear strain. If relatively strong particles, or aggregates of particles, are present, these must be reduced in size by the action of forces generated by flow in the mixer. Then the size is the actual additive particle size. The relative balance between the importance of these three processes in determining the efficiency of mixing and the product quality depends upon the attraction between additive particles, the rubber flow properties, the geometry of the mixer and the operating conditions such as temperature, mixing time and rotor speed. The interaction of operating conditions, raw material properties and the quality of mixing can be a formidable phenomenon to analyse. However, in many cases a number of s |

Engineering Data on Mixing $445 This book is a compilation of the engineering data on mixing, which have appeared in the major technical journals of chemical engineering and bioengineering since 1975. That year marked the beginning of a period of rapid advancement in the science and technology of mixing, with rather reliable results for both theoretical and experimental studies. In addition, some important earlier articles which have been, and still are being referred to, are included. Designs of both agitators and tanks still depend primarily on art and experience. In light of this it was felt that the data on mixing should be compiled and presented in a systematic manner to assist in design and analysis of agitated tanks, and to provide easier access to mixing data for various engineering activities. Although computer-aided searches of pertinent data bases can be of assistance to chemical engineers and bioengineers in their studies, they are sometimes time-consuming and often costly. Furthermore inadequate selection of key words can jeopardize the searches. This book offers an alternative method of surveying mixing data which interests readers. The first chapter presents a variety of results for the experimental measurements of flow patterns in stirred tanks. Most of the measurements were made by using modern Laser-Doppler techniques. This chapter is useful for the prediction of flow patterns in tanks with many different geometries, various types of agitators, and fluids of diverse physical and rheological properties, plus valuable data for the validation of results obtained by CFD simulations. Chapters 2 through 5 deal with data for traditional chemical engineering subjects and Chapter 6 summarizes a number of scale-up relations developed over the years for various systems. These include liquid, solid-liquid, liquid-liquid, gas-liquid, and solid-liquid-gas systems. Chapter 7 provides data related to multiphase processes, and most importantly, drop size and drop-size distributions and bubble-size distributions. These two subjects have not been treated systematically either in text books or in handbooks on stirred-tank mixing, although the results of both experimental and theoretical investigations have been reported on many occasions. Finally gas-inducing mechanically agitated systems are dealt with. The applications of this type of agitation system will become increasingly attractive from the standpoint of rationalization of stirred-tank operations as well as environmental protection. |
