Why vehicles have OBD

Vehicles these days are more efficient and less of a hazard to the environment.  This is because of advances in technology especially with electronics.  Currently all vehicles have what is called On Board Diagnostics II (OBD II) and this started for all vehicles manufactured since 1996.  This means that manufacturers of vehicles have installed a computer system that does some of the operations in a car engine.  Some of the operations that it handles are electronic fuel injection (EFI), air-fuel mixture ratio (AFR), emission control, air-intake temperature, timing, electronic ignition and many others.

All the engine operations being regulated by the computer called Engine (or Electronic) Control Unit (ECU) have sensors.  The sensors are programmed to work on parameters with a range of values.  Should the sensors detect values that are out of the parameter range, the ECU will register an Error Code pointing to the defective part of operation.  When the ECU registers that error code, which will be the time the check engine light on your dashboard will remain lit.  This is where the on board diagnostics come to work with automotive repair manuals.  To diagnose and pinpoint the defect, an OBD II scanner will be attached to the ECU.  Once connected, the scanner will be able to retrieve the error or diagnostic trouble code (DTC) saved the ECU memory.  The technician will interpret the code and check the defective part or operation.

OBD on vehicles relieves many from the tedious job of tracing where an engine defect comes from.  More parts now have sensors or actuator circuits and they provide information to the ECU if the operation or function is within the normal range.  Troubleshooting of engines is lot faster with the use of OBD scanners/obdii code reader.  It comes as more expensive for vehicle owners because of the special equipment used.  Compared to previous manual troubleshooting the time saved in doing the process could, in one way or another justify the cost.

As a reminder, only vehicles manufactured from 1996 to present would have the OBD II system installed.  So if your car is an earlier model, it could have the OBD I which is basically just for emission control.  There was a transition from 1994 to 1995, during the start of implementation; they termed the system as OBD 1.5.  Check with the manufacturer or dealer for vehicles in this year model range.

For interested vehicle owners with technical know how or with related training, there is reliable OBD II handheld equipment commercially available. Knowing how to use them will save some money and time in diagnosing car problems.  The equipment can provide you advance information in case you'll need to bring the vehicle in at a garage for repairs.
