My Furnace Needs Repair

Although my business does not offer repairs on old furnaces to the general public, I can still talk to you about having a repair done. 23 years Years ago and for the first few years of my career when I was a young service technician and before I became concerned about the environment, The companies I worked for were only concerned about getting as many customers as we could. We were concerned with having multiple income streams from the type of work we did. We did repairs, maintenance, replacements and installations to both residential and light commercial heating and cooling systems. It was a great way to make money, but it certainly did not advance the cause of taking care of the environment.

Every company I worked for back in the day, was primarily focused on providing fast reliable service to everyone and any one who would pay them for a repair no matter what the energy efficiency of the equipment was. The line of thought was that if you provide good emergency service on a repair, you could put your sticker on their equipment and then when it was time to replace it, the customer would call your company. The environment was not a concern, global warming and energy efficiency were not words that were used in the discussion.

People would call at all hours of the day and night because we offered 24 hr service. We would go out to their home with a truck full of parts and diagnose their furnace, install a new part and charge them a lot of money most of the time. The average service call was worth at least a couple of hundred bucs. We did not concern ourselves back then with the environment, global warming, energy efficiency or your utility bill. Their focus was to be the company who got the call, the one who got paid for the repair and the one who sold the part. Your energy bill was not a concern to them. Today, that is still the line of thought for many service companies. They still offer repairs on old equipment, but the end result of repairing and old furnace is still the same: the furnace eventually gets changed out because it is unreliable - its old and its inefficient!

If your furnace, is broken down today or if it breaks down in the near future, the first thing you need to do is decide whether it makes sense to repair it or not. In one of my earlier articles ( is my furnace inefficient) I talk about a 98% efficient condensing furnace. I highly recommend that you do research into the advancements of furnace technology today and into the available tax credits and rebates from utility companies. Some companies like ours offer programs such as our Big Utility Bill Discount and Our Good Neighbor Program that make doing a repair on an old furnace - a really bad investment because quite honestly a repair on an old furnace is like investing in the junk bonds of the 80's.

In my business, we do not offer repairs to the general public. We only do repairs if the product is under our warranty. The reason we don't do repairs, is that we are an environmentally friendly company and we focus on doing what’s right for the environment, more so than we do our own bottom line. We don't want to get the job of repairing an old inefficient furnace at the expense of the environment.

It's our policy, not to offer emergency service to the general public so that we know the people who call us want to make a good investment towards the health of the environment, a good decision for future generations of Americans and they want to effect climate change in a positive way.

If you’re the type of customer who is more concerned about getting every little bit of life out of an old inefficient furnace, then our business philosophy would not afford us ( you and I ) the opportunity to cross paths until you decide you’re done wasting money and that you want to stop wasting our natural resources.

In other words the answer is NO! We will not come out and repair your old furnace! We are not in the business of repairs but there are plenty of other companies who are. Companies who probably have your parts on their truck and who would be glad to come out and get your old system going again. But if you have any concern about the environment or global warming, I urge you to consider the true environmental cost of repairing out dated equipment.

Consider these environmental costs before doing a repair.

#4. There is the fuel consumption cost of getting the part from the wholesale parts store to the service company. ( creates co2 and pollution, adding to global warming)

#5. There is an added cost of fuel consumed by the service truck getting from their home base to your home. (creates co2 and pollution, adding to global warming)

# 6. There is the fuel cost of that service truck driving around carrying your part from job to job, until you need it. (creates Co2 and pollution, adding to global warming)

# 7. There is the fuel cost, of the service truck driving back to a wholesale house to pick up a new part for inventory after they sell it to you. (creates co2 and pollution, adding to global warming)

# 8. There is the energy cost associated with the inventory systems, computers and printers that go into keeping inventory at the manufacturer, the whole saler and the service company.(creates co2 and pollution, adding to global warming)

# 9. In states with sales tax, there is the energy costs of the states computer systems and lighting for offices, of people who go over the sales and use tax forms, and the paper costs associated with packaging, and mailing returns. There is the cost of the postal company that takes the envelope containing the tax return from your office to the government. (creates co2 and pollution, adding to global warming)

# 10. There is the fuel cost, associated with delivering the gasoline to the gas station where your service company fills their trucks up.

#11. There is a fuel cost in getting the part from your service company to the land fill where it is disposed of.

#12. There is a cost to the environment in packaging the part.

# 13. Then there is the cost of the fuel that your old inefficient furnace consumes, but does not provide you with heat.

The worst part is that the real energy and pollution costs of repairing an old furnace has yet to be determined, but consider that you get it fixed today and then again next year another part fails. You have to pay for additional repairs and every cost I just mentioned above happens a second time.

If you change that old furnace or air conditioner out to an energy efficient system today, you wont effect the environment nearly as much as if you wait until two or three more repairs to make that decision.
