How To Texture Walls Before Painting
Note: This guide assumes that your walls are sound and have been properly prepared to receive texture. Ensure that you have masked anything you do not want texture on.
You need to make a decision first. How large of an area do have to texture, how heavy do want your texture, and are you good with tools. If you are lightly texturing a small area; such as a powder room or a very broken up kitchen, you may want to go with store bought texture in a can. Use the contractor size of the water-based material. Adjust the nozzle on the can for the correct size, then follow the instructions below for the correct pattern to ensure proper coverage.
Do you have a large area? Are you good with tools? You may consider renting a texture machine. Or, If you are planning on future projects that involve texturing, consider purchasing a small texture hopper. Home improvement stores carry them and they're not that expensive. Most small texture guns will run off a small compressor just fine. In the long run, having you're own hopper and using joint compound is much more efficient and cost effective. For touch-up, you will want a can or two of the store bought texture as well. The water-based material matches the best.
For using a texture hopper, pre-mix your joint compound in a clean 5-gallon bucket, using a drill mixer attachment If texuring a larger area, have an assistant mixing as you go. Keeping the texture consistant and fresh. The thickness of your mix and the tip you choose for the texture gun are depentant upon the heaviness of texture you want. In my experience, mix your joint compound with water to a light/medium milkshake consistancy for an "orangepeel" texture. I use the smallest tip for my texture gun. Approximatly four gallons of mixture will texture the walls of a normal masterbath. Joint compound is inexpensive, so mix more than you will need.
To test your pattern, start in an area that is easy to spray. Make sure your hopper is orientated the correct way; so you don't dump mixture onto your head when spraying a ceiling! Connect to your compressor, which should be set to the pressure recommended by the texture gun manufacturer. Pour some mixture into the hopper. Maybe a quarter of the way. Don't fill it completely yet as you may need to adjust the viscosity of your mixture. Turn on the compressor.
Start a sideways sweeping motion with the gun/hopper and trigger it. Pull the trigger back to where the texture is the correct size and volume, adjusting the materials screw on the back of the gun to this point. This will help in having a consistant material flow. Play with the consistancy of your material, the material screw on the gun, and the air pressure from your compressor until you are satisfied with your texture. If you don't like your test spray, wipe or scrape it off immediatly and re-adjust your equipment. Remember that your texture will shrink some as it dries.
Once you are satisfied with the size of your texture, fill your hopper to about two-thirds full. Begin by spraying your texture from side to side starting at the top of your wall and working downwards, keeping the trigger full open. You don't have to fully cover the wall in one pass. Spray another coat vertically, working across your wall. This pattern ensures even coverage. Continue around the room in this manner, working on one wall at a time. After one pass around the room, check all of the tops of windows and doorjambs, these are commonly missed. Also check the wall to ceiling joint to make sure you have even coverage. It is much easier to spray the texture now than having to fix areas after priming. A shoplight or flashlight may help in spotting light areas. Leave the room and let it dry overnight.
Use your aerosal cans of texture for touch-up. Areas around toilets and in tight spaces are where these come in handy. Let the touch-up texture dry for at least an hour before priming.
Go around your room checking your texture for irregularities. Knock off any oddly shaped texture with a putty knife. Your walls are ready to be primed.
With some practice, you should be able to create a professionally textured look time and again!

Penning Mixture $79.66 High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles A Penning mixture, named after Frans Michel Penning, is a mixture of gases used in electric lighting or displaying fixtures. Although the popular phrase for the most common of these is a neon lamp, its more efficient to have the glass tube filled not with pure neon, but with a Penning mixture, which is defined as a mixture of one inert gas with a minute amount of another gas, one that has lower ionization voltage than the main constituent (or constituents). Victory Mixture $73.28 High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles Victory Mixture is a 1990 album by Willy DeVille. The album consists of cover versions of New Orleans RB and soul classics by DeVilles musical idols. Trouser Press said about the album, A rootsy covers collection, Victory Mixture provides a welcome antidote to Miracles misguided modernity, making the most of the singers relocation to New Orleans with backup from such local legends as Allen Toussaint, Eddie Bo and Dr. John. Victory Mixture is unusual in that it was recorded without the use of overdubbing or sound editing, the idea being to record the songs in the same manner as they were recorded originally in the 1950s and early 1960s without soundboard technology. Mixture Toxicity $119.95 Although the fields of toxicology and human health assessment address similar problems, the experts from these fields do not meet very frequently. Originating from a meeting of scientist in both fields, this book clearly links ecotoxicology and classic human toxicology. It incorporates extensive reviews of exposure to toxicants, toxicokinetics and toxicodynamics, toxicology of mixtures, and risk assessment. This unusual combination of coverage sets it apart from other ecotoxicological and risk assessment resources that do not discuss these topics in an integrated manner. |
