Western fans, and those of DC Comic Books hero Jonah Hex, have something to talk about this weekend. The Warner Brothers debut of the legendary gunslinger, slash bounty hunter, slash supernatural anti-hero could be the hottest ticket this weekend. Josh Brolin assumes the starring role of the tortured Hex, beside the sultry Megan Fox as heady prostitute Lilah, puts an interesting dynamic into place.

DC Comics (and others) has been a gold mine for Hollywood these past few years. Jonah Woodson Hex, created by writer John Albano and artist Tony DeZuniga, is the latest character to be summoned from the pages of comic lore (read the saga here). Legendary stories like Jonah Hex, with rich characters like arch nemesis Quentin Turnbull (played by John Malkovich), could just resurrect the genre. That is if the film lives up to its hype. On its scarred hero's face (and the movie's marque) all the elements are in place for a success.

The story is there and has been for decades, Brolin and Fox are perfect for the roles, people are sick and tired of endless car chases, and finally Director Jimmy Hayward is one of the best in the business. For a period piece, aside the Hollywood weapons, the film stills and trailers reveal pretty stunning authenticity. It ain't John Wayne, but a new age "Good, Bad, and Ugly" certainly seems applicable.

The heyday of the western motif is a Hollywood icon many thought was dead and gone, but any movie fan knows "horse poop and gunpowder" only lays in wait for better heroes. It will be interesting to see if the writing for the screen by Mark Neveldine, Brian Taylor, an a herd of others can transform Jonas' paperback character into a digital one story wise (how hard could it be – this ain't Hamlet). The trailer below reveals a little the film's possibility. Fox is sexy as ever, so is Brolin save the strange scar job they did on his face, and the horses and guns? Maybe a little too Atria Gordon "Wild Wild West" for my taste.

I cannot wait to catch the full length version actually. The comic character is actually one of the best ever written, and of course, the six gun has been silent for far too long. Maybe there is room for tall tales of the American west still?
