One of the most important pieces of information that you need to know when you use lifting straps is how much the item weighs that you plan to lift. If you lift objects of various girth, you may need a variety of straps that are sorted by working load limit.

Lifting straps or slings is normally used with a crane, hoist or similar equipment to move an item from one place to another. They are commonly employed at construction sites, marinas (to lift boats out of the water) and pretty much anywhere you are moving around heavy loads. The straps are usually made out of nylon or polyester. However, for the toughest jobs you may need one made of wire rope or chain. These are for situations that require a high working load limit or where you will be lifting something from above and need the strongest materials possible.

A working load limit is the maximum weight of a load that should be lifted using the particular sling. This is different from the breaking strength which is the weight at which the strap was tested and broke. The latter number should be much higher than the former. In addition, the load limit can vary depending on how you are using the sling or what type of hitch you are using.

For example, a strap could have a capacity of 500 pounds when used in a choker hitch and 1000 pounds when used in a vertical hitch. The manufacturer will include recommendations and calculations for figuring this kind of information for each job.

What does 500 pounds look like? What does 10,000 pounds look like? Here are some common examples to give you an idea of how much things weigh on average but it is important to get an actual weight of any load for which you employ lifting straps.

* 500 lbs = an adult horse or cow might tip the scales at this number

* 1,000 lbs = baby elephant

* 5,000 lbs = car

* 10,000 lbs = armored Humvee

* 50,000 lbs = DOT snowplow vehicle

* 100,000 lbs = house
