Drums are one of the important elements of a manufacturing industry. It is a cylindrical container that is commonly used to transport various goods in bulk. The kind of drums that will be used in the shipment will depend on the goods that will be placed on it. For instance, cardboard and plastic drums are commonly used in the shipment of dangerous materials of bulk goods. Similarly, drums made of thermoplastics such as nylon or polyvinyl chlorides are used in transporting acid and caustic materials.

Steel drums are one of the popular types that are used in the shipment of flammable substances such as alcohol and petroleum distillates. In the United States, it is commonly known in the manufacturing industry as the 55 gallon drum or 44 gallon drum in United Kingdom. It has a nominal capacity of 55 U.S. gallons (in the SI metric system units) or 44 imperial gallons (in the English system units). The precise capacity of this type of drum may vary according to the wall thickness and other factors as well.

Aside from storing flammable substances, 55 gallon drums are also used in storage of different chemicals that are used in manufacturing medicines or other industrial products. It is commonly made of steel with a ribbed surface top enhance durability and rigidity. They are moved from one location to another by tilting and then rolling along the base.

The standard diameter of 55 gallon drums is around 22.5 inches or 57.2 centimeter, thus making it bulky and difficult to transfer from one location another by just rolling it on the floor. In addition, the net volume of any liquid that can be stored on such drums is estimated to be 90 percent of the nominal capacity.

That is why different industries that make use of 55 gallon drums in storing and shipping their products through 55 gallon drums commonly use hoists. It is a lifting device that is used in either lowering or lifting the drums by means of a lift wheel in which a chain wrap or a rope is wrapped around it. The hoist that is used to move 55 gallon drums can be manually or electrically operated (though in most large industries such as petroleum refineries, they make use of electrically-operated 55 gallon drum hoists).

55 gallon drum hoists are classified into two types: the horizontal and the vertical lift. The former makes use of slings or simple hooks to lift a 55 gallon drum in a horizontal manner especially if you will place it on a cradle. The latter, however, is the most common hoist type that is used since most drums are ideally stored in a vertical manner. Such hoists make use of vertical lifter to move the drum.

The hoist is attached to a lift wheel or a chain block and then transports the drums in either vertical or horizontal position. It is designed to hold the drums without damaging the body due to the effect of gravity and pressure of moving liquid. The drum will be secured in a saddle by a pawl mechanism and ratchet. Once the drum is now loaded, it will be carried without tilting and placing it on a preferred location.

Hoists for 55 gallon drums are of great help for the manufacturing industry. Transporting bulk goods is now convenient and there is an assurance that the drum will not be damaged while in motion and transportation.
