The Wide Range Of Styles Of Guitars And Performers

Music is a very individual expression, and for almost every musician and performer there is a style that is both defined by them, and created for them. A musician's instrument is as much a part of that individual expression as the performer, and this is just as true, if not especially so, when it comes to the guitar. When you think of famous guitarists such as Jimmy Hendrix or Brian Welch, Eddie Van Halen, Fletcher Dragge, Angus Young or BB King, each of these is renowned for his own individual style and personal way of expressing himself through the music, but in addition to the fact that each of these performers has a very individual style which is all their own, each performer has used a style of guitar which is quite different from the others. For every one of these well known guitarists, there is a style of guitar which helps to complement the way they perform, and the style, tone and voice they need in order to help compliment their performance.

A guitar is capable of playing very soft, delicate tones, but also capable of screaming rock chords and thrashing bass notes. To take each of the guitarists above, Jimmy Hendrix is best known for his style made famous during the 1960s, and his guitar of choice was the classic electric guitar, the Fender Stratocaster. On the other hand, Eddie Van Halen is best known for a completely different sound, which is best described more of a tapping sound, particularly the intricate tapping solos. In order to achieve his sound, he uses a guitar which is actually custom made, but based on a Wolfgang, which is a peavey guitar.

Blues musicians, such as BB King have an entirely different sound altogether, and blues music is a style that is easily recognizable, and quite distinct from any other kind. In order to create the mellow tones of blues music, King uses a Gibson hollow body, the hollow chamber of the guitar creating a resonance that naturally amplifies, and softens the notes performed.

Whilst hollow body electric guitars use the natural amplification of the guitar body to soften the notes slightly, using a solid body creates not only sharper notes, but since the guitar relies entirely on external gadgets and electronics to amplify the notes, allows for a wide range of effects to be implemented. Angus Young is the lead guitarists for AC/DC and in contrast to BB King who uses a Gibson hollow body, Young uses a Gibson solid body - and if you listen to both performers you can tell immediately the difference in tone and voice. Ignoring style of performance and the actual genre, the sound or voice of the guitar is noticeably different, yet essentially the only real difference is whether the body of the guitar is solid or hollow.

If you are considering buying a guitar, or learning to play guitar, one of the things that may well have inspired you is the sound of a particular genre, or band, or performer. Whilst this inspiration is good, in some cases it can result in disappointment, as many of these performers have spent a lifetime perfecting their individual style, and working with a particular type of guitar. For example, as a beginner trying to learn to play a steel strung guitar is almost certainly going to result in so much pain and discomfort that giving up lessons will become much more appealing! Sticking to a standard six string nylon strung classic acoustic guitar is the best way to learn to play. After that, listening to different bands and performers is a good way of getting to know and recognise the wide range of sounds that guitars can produce.

Thing Knowledge: A Philosophy of Scientific Instruments

Thing Knowledge: A Philosophy of Scientific Instruments

$63.91

Western philosophers have traditionally concentrated on theory as the means for expressing knowledge about a variety of phenomena. This absorbing book challenges this fundamental notion by showing how objects themselves, specifically scientific instruments, can express knowledge. As he considers numerous intriguing examples, Davis Baird gives us the tools to "read" the material products of science and technology and to understand their place in culture. Making a provocative and original challenge to our conception of knowledge itself, "Thing Knowledge "demands that we take a new look at theories of science and technology, knowledge, progress, and change. Baird considers a wide range of instruments, including Faraday's first electric motor, eighteenth-century mechanical models of the solar system, the cyclotron, various instruments developed by analytical chemists between 1930 and 1960, spectrometers, and more.

Environmental Policy in Search of New Instruments

Environmental Policy in Search of New Instruments

$396.7

Environmental policy is undergoing a dramatic transformation. The problems connected with global change, the need for preventative action, and the growing importance of nonsource pollution call for new courses of action and new institutional arrangements. In this situation, it is fairly obvious that both the traditional command and control policy instruments and the more modern financial and economic instruments are increasingly under stress. This volume deliberately aims to break new ground in providing the conceptual tools necessary for the next generation of environmental policies. In doing so, it covers a wide interdisciplinary range, from public policy analysis to international law, and draws upon much international experience, well reflected by the mixed composition of the contributors. On the basis of a shared theoretical framework, the book explores the potential of new policy instruments, such as policy evaluation or mediation, proposes alternative institutional arrangements for dealing with the issues, classifies existing instruments, and illuminates the process through which old and new tools can be set into operation. Vienna Instruments Orchestral Strings 1

Vienna Instruments Orchestral Strings 1

$545

The Vienna Symphonic Library Orchestral Strings 1 collection includes a 14-player violin ensemble as well as a 10-player viola ensemble. The string sections of the Vienna Instruments offer an extremely wide range of articulations. The special qualities of these virtual instruments are the result of a multitude of performances. With larger ensembles, the random effect of articulations like performance trills or fast legatos is especially pronounced, lending those performance patches remarkable authenticity in conjunction with the new performance algorithms in the Vienna virtual instruments. The larger the ensemble, the more intense the random effect; the natural "inexactitude" among the musicians when changing from one tone to the next. This effect gets extra attention with the "Repetition Performance Pizzicatos" --an innovation only available with the large string ensembles and recorded in 2 different tempos. Many requests for additional samples were fulfilled, including the short staccatos, the expressive Interval Legatos, espressivo con sordino, as well as extensions of the tonal ranges for sustains and staccatos. The virtual violin section was the largest ensemble recorded at Vienna's Silent Stage. The 14 violinists are headed by Christian Eisenberger, who in his esteemed international concert work has collaborated with artists and conductors such as Claudio Abbado, Martha Argerich, Nikolaus Harnoncourt, Herbert von Karajan, Gidon Kremer, Kent Nagano, Roger Norrington, Murray Perahia, Andras Schiff, Georg Solti, and many others. The ensemble of 10 violas is headed by Anett Homoki who is a member of the Vienna Chamber Philharmony as well as of the Volksoper Vienna.ArticulationsPerformances:Interval Performances: legato, portamento, staccato, tremoloFast Interval Performances: legato, marcato, spiccatoPerformance TrillsInterval Performances muted (con sordino): normal, portamentoViolins: Interval Performance Glissandos on the same stringRepetition Performances: legato, bow vibrato, portato, staccato, spiccato, harsh, upbeats, pizzicatoRepetition Performances muted: sustains, legato, portato, staccatoRuns: legato, spiccato; major, minor, chromatic, whole toneSingle notes:Short notes: short staccato, staccato, short dtach, long dtach, 4 variations eachLong notes: sustains with and without vibrato, espressivo, flautandoDynamics: various crescendos & diminuendos, with and without vibrato, fp, sfz, sffz, pfpTremolos: sustains, crescendo & diminuendoTrills: half tone, whole tone, minor, major 3rd, accelerandoPizzicatos and Bartk pizzicatos (loose and tight)Col legnoCon sordino: staccato, dtach, sustained, crescendos & diminuendos, fortepiano, sforzato, tremolo, pizzicato, trillsSul ponticello: staccato, sustains, crescendos & diminuendos, sfz, tremoloArtificial harmonics: staccato, sustains

The Vienna Symphonic Library Harps sound collection offers 2 harps played by renowned musicians and beautifully sampled. The first virtual harp is played by Ruth Rojahn, harpist of the Hofer Symphoniker and internationally successful soloist. Apart from single notes in various playing styles the first harp offers an enormous wealth of glissandos that are particularly brilliant and easy to use. The controller structure allows for extremely flexible and quick access--you can switch between ranges, different tempos, up and down movements, and different scales in real-time while playing. Now the virtual instrument software lets you access all Dimensions at the same time. The first harp's spectrum is rounded out by a wide range of arpeggios which were not available until now. The second virtual harp, played by Julia Reth, contains an even larger number of single notes, also offering playing styles like damped, fingernail playing, and pedal glissandos. Hedging Energy Risks with Derivative Instruments in Oil Trading

Hedging Energy Risks with Derivative Instruments in Oil Trading

$51.9

The nancial crisis has proven how volatile markets can become within a very shor t period of time. One commodity that went through peaks and troughs is without doubt oil. A wide range of companies with business activities relying on the commodity and stable pricing, also went through highs and lows, whilst some went into liquidation. This circumstance let many companies think carefully about their risk exposure and how they effectively can manage it. This paper shows that: The main exercise to mitigate risk is a well-structured risk management operation which deliver the fundamentals for an effective usage of derivative instruments. Prior to any securing activity with swaps or options, companies must pin-point their current risk position, portfolios and their values. On this, the classical portfolio theory with the various modern extensions and portfolio analysis tools deliver a good concept for this question, however, oil has cer tain characteristics which companies need to take into consideration. Furthermore, the portfolio theory may not helping to mitigate risk that is driven by economic factors, hence, spreading risk in an essential part, but some risks can only be addressed other means. All variables may be used to derive, the hedging strategy, time horizon and trading instrument. Especially for the instruments, the paper shows a wide range of commonly used instruments and how they can be applied for distinct oil risk issues.

SCIENTIFIC INSTRUMENTS SCIENTIFIC INSTRUMENTS Described by Specialists under the Editorship of HERBERT J. COOPER B. Sc., A. R. C. S. I., A. MJ. E. E. Head of Engineering Department, South-West Essex Technical College and School of Art. HUTCHINSONS SCIENTIFIC AND TECHNICAL PUBLICATIONS LONDON NEW YORK MELBOURNE SYDNEY PREFACE The complexity of modern science and the enormous range of modern knowledge have sometimes unfortunate consequences. One of these is specialisation, a result of which is that one group of scientists does not know how another group works. It often happens that one scientist would like to know something of the fundamental principles and uses of the instruments used by his colleagues, possibly in the hope that they may be helpful to him or just to satisfy a commendable curiosity this book is an attempt to meet this desire. Scientific instruments are here described in a way that may be understood by the non-specialist so that the worker in one field may get a useful idea of the instruments used in another. The book does not set out to tell the specialist about his own equipment but about the other mans. The surveyor will not learn from it all that he ought to know about the theodolite and its use, but he may gather some useful information about calculating machines and lenses, while the mathe matician and the optician may well like to know something about the theodolite or the mariners compass which this book can tell them, though it will not tell them anything that as specialists they should know already about the slide rule and lenses, respectively. But how many of the vast numbers of people who every day use optical instru ments whether cameras or spectaclesunderstand the functioning of a lens The book is in no sense meant to be an exhaustive treatise on instru ments, but it is hoped that it will be valuable to the student and to the research worker, as well as to many people who are using scientific instruments and require a working knowledge of them without going into the details of design. As shown in the contents list, the book is divided into five sections of broad types of instruments and each section contains a chapter on various specific classes thus Section 1, on optical instruments, has chapters on lenses, on microscopes and spectroscopes, etc. Inevitably, selection and division of sections and chapters are some what arbitrary thus the theodolite and sextant are described as survey ing and navigational instruments but might have been included as optical, as indeed could the majority of scientific instruments. Any suggestions for rearrangement and indeed for any improvement in future editions will be welcome and careful consideration given to them. The Editor and Publishers are of course well aware that the book is very far from being exhaustive in the number of instruments it describes, but it is hoped that future volumes and editions will be justified by the rec accorded to this first effort. Gratitude is expressed

Policy Instruments for Environmental and Natural Resource Management

Policy Instruments for Environmental and Natural Resource Management

$55

As Thomas Sterner points out, the economic 'toolkit' for dealing with environmental problems has become formidable. It includes taxes, charges, permits, deposit-refund systems, labeling, and other information disclosure mechanisms. Though not all these devices are widely used, empirical application has started within some sectors, and we are beginning to see the first systematic efforts at an advanced policy design that takes due account of market-based incentives. Sterner’s book encourages more widespread and careful use of economic policy instruments. Intended primarily for application in developing and transitional countries, the book compares the accumulated experiences of the use of economic policy instruments in the U.S. and Europe, as well as in select rich and poor countries in Asia, Africa, and Latin America. Ambitious in scope, the book discusses the design of instruments that can be employed in a wide range of contexts, including transportation, industrial pollution, water pricing, waste, fisheries, forests, and agriculture. Policy Instruments for Environmental and Natural Resource Management is deeply rooted in economics but also informed by perspectives drawn from political, legal, ecological, and psychological research. Sterner notes that, in addition to meeting requirements for efficiency, the selection and design of policy instruments must satisfy criteria involving equity and political acceptability. He is careful to distinguish between the well-designed plans of policymakers and the resulting behavior of society. A copublication of Resources for the Future, the World Bank, and the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida).

Basic Guide to Dental Instruments

Basic Guide to Dental Instruments

$48.99

Basic Guide to Dental Instruments provides a working inventory of dental instrumentation in common use in dental surgeries. A clear photograph of each class and many varieties of instrument is included, and then described according to the following principles: name, usage, any relevant features and varieties. Each section is dedicated to a specific discipline or division of dentistry. Complete set-ups have been included at the end of most sections for various procedures. The coverage reflects instrumentation and accessory items used in general dental practice, routine hospital dental procedures and selected specialist settings. The author adopts a flexible approach which recognises that some instruments are multi-functional, and their names and usage can vary across dental surgeries. This approach, coupled with the range of instruments covered, makes the book an ideal 'portable' resource across general practice, hospital and a range of specialist settings. The book also highlights instruments which can be easily confused. In addition to detailing the classic sets of dental instruments, the importance of instrument care and sterilisation regimes is acknowledged.
