Changing the Industrial Geography in Asia: The Impact of China and India $28.94 A great burst of globalization brought the 20th century to a close, creating upheaval in the world economy from roughly 1995 to 2008. And now a second upheaveal is in the offing following the severe financial crisis that plunged the global economy into recession in 2008-09. The first upheaval witnessed a massive migration of manufacturing and certain business services that transformed Asia into the industrial heartland of the world. The second upheaval will likely consolidate Asia's industrial preeminence and could result in a concentration of industrial activities in the two most populous and fastest-growing Asian economies -- China and India. As the two Asian giants become the industrial equals of the United States, Germany, and Japan, the ramifications will affect trade and growth worldwide, the future of development in China and India, and industrialization throughout Asia. This book examines these developments, focusing specifically on China and India. Its analysis and conclusions will be of particular interest to policy makers and academics, as well as anyone with an interest in how China and India are likely to reshape industry thruoghout Asia. |

The Industrial Revolution $60.5 The confluence of developments in technology, labor and management practice, and market expansion in the period from 1760 to 1850 so drastically altered the context of economic relations that, taken together, these changes have earned the name, Industrial Revolution. This book, the first in a series of titles to explore turning points and important events in business history, explains the nature of these changes, how they came about, how people reacted to the new economic environment, and the direct impact that they have had on the way business is conducted today. This volume will address how the Industrial Revolution played out in Europe, the United States, and the rest of the world, emphasizing the role of the government in both promoting and regulating commerce. It will clarify the important distinctions between the original Industrial Revolution and the second Industrial Revolution (approximately 1850 to the early 20th century), which was characterized by accelerating growth, brought about the introduction of the internal combustion engine, electric power, and other technological and managerial developments. Featuring biographical sketches, photos, a timeline, a glossary of key terms, and excerpts of primary documents, "The Industrial Revolution" reveals the daily life of the entrepreneurs, bureaucrats, and workers who experienced the dramatic changes in technology, business, and trade, and the resulting changes in society and culture. |

Industrial Development and Displacement $78.95 This significant book is based on intensive fieldwork in Korba, a little known multi-project industrial area in Chhattisgarh. It describes the impact of piecemeal industrial development, and its consequent environmental degradation on the lives of the original inhabitants of the region. This timely and thought-provoking book about the impact of multiple industrial projects on the environment and on the lives of the local people questions the concept of ‘development’ that benefits a few at the cost of many. |

The Industrial Revolution in World History $51.33 The industrial revolution is generally recognized as a major development in world history. Even so, the study of it is routinely handled as simply part of Western European history or as part of individual national histories. Peter N. Stearns offers a genuinely world-historical approach, looking at the international factors that touched off the industrial revolution and at its global spread and impact. In this revised third edition, "The Industrial Revolution in World History" begins with an examination of industrialization in the West, but it also treats later cases in other societies-including Japan, Russia, and the United States, as well as newly revised sections on Asia and Latin America-providing the comparative analysis usually lacking in single-nation treatments. Although the text defines the essence of industrialization in terms of technology and economic organization, it pays substantial attention to larger social results, especially changes in the experience of work and shifts in family functions and gender roles. Including a new chapter on global environmental impact, "The Industrial Revolution in World History" seeks to build on recent scholarly advances to include a more fully international and human perspective in our understanding of the industrial revolution. The third edition also features fully revised sections on globalization, causation, and non-Western societies, further strengthening Stearns' discussion of complex industrial and international trends. |

Handbook of Environmental Impact Assessment $300 Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) is a significant, anticipatory, environmental management tool. International debate focuses on its enhancement to meet the challenges of sustainable development as well as demands for scientifically robust integrated and participative decision-making. This handbook hopes to improve practices by contributing an international, multidisciplinary, ready-reference source to this debate. Volume I addresses EIA principles, process and methods. Part 1 maps the EIA process and its impact on decision. It positions EIA in the context of sustainable development and relative to other decision tools, including economic valuation. It also positions strategic environmental assessment (SEA) in a similar way. Part 2 addresses the elements of the EIA process and significant impact assessment topics (air, water, ecological, social, risk, landscape and visual) not only in terms of good practice but also methodological evolution. This volume concludes by addressing cumulative impact assessment and SEA methods. Volume II provides a unique consideration for EIA implementation and practice in Europe, Africa, the Far East, South America and North America. It uses a number of project types to provide 'how to do' guidance and addresses practice in policy and plan assessment. This book should be read by legislators, decision-makers, economists, developers, industrial managers and consultants involved in this significant field. |

The Impact of the Russo-Japanese War $47.46 The Russo-Japanese War was the major conflict of the earliest decade of the twentieth century. The struggle for mastery in northeast Asia, specifically for control of Korea, was watched at the time very closely by observers from many other countries keen to draw lessons about the conduct of war in the modern industrial age. The defeat of a traditional European power by a non-white, non-western nation became a model for imitation and admiration among people under, or threatened with, colonial rule. Examining the wide impact of the war and exploring the effect on the political balance in northeast Asia, this book focuses on the reactions in Europe, the United States, East Asia and the wider colonial world, considering the impact on different sections of society, on political and cultural ideas and ideologies, and on various national independence movements. |
