Spray Sunless Tanning, How It's Done

It's getting harder to find a person who is not at least generally familiar with sunless tanning. Most are familiar with its many names and some even have a cursory understanding of the various types of spray tanning equiment and how they function. Spray tanning can be done manually which seems by far to be the favored application of most you will ask, or by an automated both which for some offers convenience. 

"Spray tanning" is the most general and probobly most acurate term to describe the prosess which is essentially the sprayed application of a solution used as a carrier for the active ingredients, primaraly DHA or dihydroxyacetone and  in some cases erythrulose, both of which some erroneously refer to as dye or tanning color. The process may also be called airbrush tanning, sunless tanning, spray-on tanning etc. to name a few. The term "sunless tanning" would best be used when discribing the industry or the sum of the products used and sold within it, including everything form spray tanning equipment, solutions, lotions, booths, tents and more.

Most manufactures of sunless products find that the most effective active ingredient is Dihydroxyacetone CAS No. 62147-49-3, which is a fermented glycerin that is derived from cane or beet sugar. The actual substance look, smells and tastes much like powdered confectioners sugar. Some manufacturers will add a secondary active- erythrulose which is a berry derrivative that acts much the same way on the skin but is not nearly as effective. Solutions and lotions will also employ other ingredients that aid in the tanning prossess such as rheological modifiers for viscosity, humectants and botanicals to aid in skin conditioning.

There are hundreds of companies selling tanning solutions but creating a quality sunless tanning solution can take a lot of work and investment. The best sunless tanning solution is one that does cause a bad smelling reaction with the skins amino acids or leave the skin dry orange, or patchy. Good solutions have the proper "grab" or viscosity so that the solution lays on the skin without beading or streaking. Only the very best companies seem to be able to produce such product. Goodspa, the company that was a pioneer in the industry sold under several top lables beginning in the late 90's produced some of the better solutions and lotions, most notably TangoSun TM with it's trademark essential orange oil fragrance which sells mostly in the U.S. and Australia.

The industry began with airbrush artists using small air brushes to spray DHA solutions onto the skin. The airbrush which is a small pencil sized instrument has not become or should be obsolete in the industry due to it's over atomization of tanning product and other limitation such as the exhaustive application time (by some reports as long as 30 minutes), both of which can be bad for small business owners. Gradually companies like Goodspa began to implement HVLP (High-volume-Low-Pressure) technology to pick up the pace and give more of a controlled application. These HVLP systems are basically turbines which use a larger gun or applicator that internally mixes a greater volume of air with the tanning solution to coat the skin without fogging up the work environment like the explosive over atomization created by compressed air systems. Sadly some of the best known companies are still selling the old compressor based systems to this day.
