Asbestos Induced Injuries and Deaths Could be Prevented
Many people have dedicated their lives to better understanding disease development associated with asbestos exposure. One interesting study is called, "Serum promotes asbestos-induced injury to human pulmonary epithelial cells" by Kamp DW, Dunne M, Anderson JA, Weitzman SA, Dunn MM - J Lab Clin Med. 1990 Sep;116(3):289-97. Here is an excerpt: "Abstract - Asbestos exposure causes chronic interstitial pulmonary fibrosis. Injury to human pulmonary epithelial cells (HPEC) is speculated to precede the fibrotic response. We investigated whether asbestos, either alone or in conjunction with serum, injured cultured HPEC as assessed in a standard chromium 51 release assay. Amosite asbestos in serum-free media induced modest HPEC injury (9.4% +/- 3.3% Cr release), which was significantly enhanced (2.7-fold) in the presence of serum (25.5% +/- 4% Cr release). HPEC cytotoxicity was both asbestos and serum dose-dependent. Additionally, we demonstrated that, compared with HPEC injury induced by asbestos plus serum, (1) heat-decomplemented serum or serum fractions of a wide range of molecular weights were equipotent to fresh serum, (2) catalase, superoxide dismutase, or dimethylthiourea was not protective, (3) 3-aminobenzamide, which prevents oxidant-induced adenosine triphosphate depletion by inhibiting poly-adenosine diphosphate-ribose polymerase, afforded significant protection (32% decrease in HPEC injury), and (4) deferoxamine-treated asbestos was significantly less toxic to HPEC compared with untreated asbestos, causing a 57% decrease in HPEC cytotoxicity. Electron microscopic studies revealed that, compared with buffer, serum increased the amount of amosite asbestos along the surface and inside HPEC. Thus, amosite asbestos is cytotoxic to cultured HPEC and serum promotes this injurious effect by augmenting the interaction of asbestos with HPEC. These data suggest that this effect may occur by increasing intracellular oxidant stress mediated in part by the iron in asbestos."
Another interesting study is called, "The significance of asbestos exposure in the diagnosis of mesothelioma: a 28-year experience from a major urban hospital." By
Hasan FM, Nash G, Kazemi H. - Am Rev Respir Dis. 1977 May;115(5):761-8. Here is an excerpt: "Abstract - A continued increase in the incidence of diffuse mesothelioma has been attributed to greater industrial use of asbestos but is also due in part to wider acceptance of this tumor by pathologists. In this retrospective study, the epidemiology, clinical presentation, and pathology of asbestos and non-asbestos-related mesothelioma from a major urban hospital were reviewed. Of the 36 cases of mesothelioma on file, 19 were not associated with exposure to asbestos. Although a retrospective study raises the possibility of inadequate occupational histories, the lack of history of asbestos exposure correlated with postmortem histology by light microscopy. When postmortem material was reviewed, evidence of asbestos exposure was present in all cases of mesothelioma with history of exposure to asbestos, and in no cases in which the patient denied history of asbestos exposure. Using strict histologic and histochemical criteria, the diagnosis of mesothelioma was confirmed in 8 of 9 patients with asbestos-related mesothelioma but in only 4 of 13 cases of non-asbestos-related mesothelioma. The diagnosis of diffuse methelioma is often difficult to make even wtih complete autopsy examinations. It should be entertained only with adherence to strict clinical and pathologic criteria, especially in women with no history to exposure to asbestos dust."
Another interesting study is called, "Novel quantum confined structures via atmospheric pressure MOCVD growth in asbestos and opals" by H. M. Yatesa, W. R. Flavellb, M. E. Pemblea, N. P. Johnsonc, S. G. Romanovd and C. M. Sotomayor-Torresc - Journal of Crystal Growth - Volume 170, Issues 1-4, 1 January 1997, Pages 611-615 - Metalorganic Vapour Phase Epitaxy 1996 – Here is an excerpt: "Abstract - Porous host materials of opal and asbestos have been infilled with InP by atmospheric pressure MOCVD. These were characterised by a variety of techniques including PL at 4 and 300 K. The PL gave clear evidence of quantum confinement with the InP bound exciton blue shifted by at least 0.2 eV. Opal/InP gave the additional characteristic of controlling the stop-band of the host. These all represent a new method of producing easily contactable quantum device structures."
We all owe a debt of gratitude to these researchers. If you found any of these excerpts interesting, please read the studies in their entirety.

In the Heat $3.95 Boxer Miles Young thinks he's got one more shot in him before it's time to hang up the gloves for good. He may be the only one who thinks so. The truth is, he enjoys the recognition his career has brought him at home, in the small Latin American country of Belize, and he's worried about how he'll support his daughter once it's over. So when his promoter comes to him with a proposition that includes one last big fight, he listens. Isabelle Gilmore wants Miles to find her daughter, who's run off with some of her mother's money and her no-good boyfriend. Isabelle's afraid Rian's going to marry the kid, the only son of corrupt ex--police chief Marlon Tablada, and she wants Rian---and the money---found. In return, Miles gets put on a fight card with a $30,000 payday. He's reluctant, but Isabelle thinks a hometown hero can get people to talk in ways a private investigator can't. Trouble is, before he can find Rian, he learns that there's much more to Isabelle, her daughter, and Marlon than Isabelle let on. Clearly at home in the world of hardboiled crime writing, debut novelist Ian Vasquez is a bright new talent who infuses "In the Heat" with a steamy, exotic voice all his own. |

Title IX: A Brief History Wtih Documents $20.6 Title IX represents a watershed in the history of girls' and women's education. In 1971, the year before Title IX was passed, fewer than 295,000 high school girls and 30,000 college women participated in their schools' athletic programs. By 2001, those numbers had increased to 2.8 million and 150,000, respectively. Through this rich collection of documents, Susan Ware shows how athletics, once viewed as a privilege, came to be seen as a right. In her introduction, she examines Title IX within the broader social and legislative history of the late twentieth century, providing her readers with a clear account of the changes taking place in educational institutions and in athletics more specifically. Her selections, each accompanied by a headnote providing context, offer a wide variety of perspectives, highlighting controversies surrounding the legislation that continue to the present. Document headnotes, a chronology, questions for consideration, and a selected bibliography offer additional pedagogical support. |

Heat Transfer $126.65 The single objective of this book is to provide engineers with the capability, tools, and confidence to solve real-world heat transfer problems. It includes many advanced topics, such as Bessel functions, Laplace transforms, separation of variables, Duhamel's theorem, and complex combination, as well as high order explicit and implicit numerical integration algorithms. These analytical and numerical solution methods are applied to topics not considered in most textbooks. Examples are heat exchangers involving fluids with varying specific heats or phase changes; heat exchangers in which axial conduction is a concern; and regenerators. To improve readability, derivations of important results are presented completely, without skipping steps, which reduces student frustration and improves retention. The examples in the book are ubiquitous, not trivial "textbook" exercises. They are rather complex and timely real-world problems that are inherently interesting. This textbook integrates the computational software packages Maple, MATLAB, FEHT, and Engineering Equation Solver (EES) directly with the heat transfer material. |
