I remember coming in to work on a Monday, and looking for one of the 4 new $20 brushes that I had bought on Friday for my painters. What I found made me sick, all four brushes sitting in dried up thinner hardened with paint. With brush cleaner and an hour and a half, these 2 day old brushes might be restored. So these 2 day old brushes would need an investment of money and lost time to make them work as they should.

 

Needless to say I was livid. I can't remember what I said as it was a while ago, but since I was younger; I can give you an idea of the language that came out of my mouth. I asked the painter nearest to me, "Jimmy, what the xxxx happened to these new brushes?" he blithely remarked that everyone was in a hurry on Friday (who would think?), and the brushes didn't get cleaned.

With that revelation, I instituted a plan where I added $2 per week to every body's paycheck with the idea that $104 per year was a good brush allowance. My idea was then to take away any complaints about their buying brushes, and to take the sting out of me having to buy them started brushes. I did get a few complaints, but when I said how you don't expect a carpenter to show up on the job without a hammer, they all agreed.

 

From that time on the 2 or 3 brushes grew, to the point where now, everyone brings their own tools, some painters bring 2 full tool boxes to work each day plus their own personal cordless drills and screw guns. I never imagined that they would go so far as to bring all of that.

 

The amazing thing was that nobody had a dirty brush the next morning, or a brush left standing in water or thinner to acquire those lovely bent bristles that reflect on a lack of care. Everyone's brushes, spackle knives and tools are all clean and spotless. Oh and don't ask to borrow somebody's good brush and return it dirty.

 

After all you don't expect a carpenter to show up without a hammer, do you?
