How to keep a dog from escaping an Invisible Fence

The old adage "Good fences make good neighbors" is especially applicable when the neighbors own dogs. If you own a dog, you want to be that "GOOD" neighbor. There are many fencing systems available to satisfy personal needs as well as zoning requirements. I can say from experience that an invisible fence is a good choice, especially if you live in a neighborhood that doesn't allow fences, as I once did.

These fences are very reliable and it is easy to train your dog (or cat, believe it or not) to it. So how do you prevent your dog from getting out? There several reasons a dog may break through his electronic fence. These fences require maintenance, but it's not painting or nailing up new boards. It's normally a problem with the batteries. First, you will want to check the dog's fence collar. Make sure the battery is still good. Most batteries will last for about four months, so be sure to check before that four month mark. Also check the battery in the electronic fence itself. If the batteries are still good, check that there is a tight fit in the battery case . Some electronic collars or fences will malfunction and might drain the battery you have installed. If that's the case, be sure to contact the dealer. If there is no local dealer, contact the manufacturer directly. The electronic collar should not be too loose. The metal posts need to make contact with the dog's skin. If your dog has especially thick hair, you may need to thin it a bit.

So you have checked all that and the dog still escapes? You should now check the adjustment on the fence. Most underground systems have two adjustments. The first adjustment is the signal field adjustment. If this is too small, most dogs can get through the field without having the fence give it's warning. Most underground fence systems have a short delay. If your fence transmitter is only set up to a two foot signal field it may need to be turned up. Make an adjustment based upon the size of the yard. It has been suggested that a good field size is at least six feet on property of a half acre. If more than two acres have been fenced, you can easily have a ten foot signal field. Next check the invisible dog fence receiver. Most fence systems can be adjusted for a stronger correction. This means a stronger shock and removing the delay or shortening the delay field. Some containment systems will have a adjustment on the transmitter or the fence receiver itself. See your owners manual for your brand as they are all a little different.

If your invisible dog fence brand is not adjustable at the transmitter or on the receiver you will need to have a tech come out or visit the dealer. If your dog is still leaving the containment area after these adjustments, try to learn out where he's getting through. Most dogs seem to leave the fenced area in the same spot; the driveway is the common spot. I have been told that an effective method to break the habit is to tie your dog in the area where he has been escaping. For about two weeks tie the dog out with the fence receiver on. Leave the slack in the leash or rope long enough to almost get out of the fenced area but not all the way out. I know you got the fence so you don't have to tie him up, but a couple of weeks of this is what I have found to be the most affective to break the dogs bad habit and keep your pet at home.
