Save Money on Your Cable and Satellite Bills

Cable and Satellite bills keep going through the roof. I was paying around $60 a month for just a median priced
service. For that you'd think you could get all the channels that were available. That's $720 a year!

That's a lot in this economy. So how did I save money on my bill? I got rid of it, and I still have more shows to watch than I have time to watch them.

Realizing that the satellite companies were getting rich off of me I decided to take action. It just occurred to me
after seeing all the sites online that offer free TV shows, "What if I could watch those shows on my television set?".
I wasn't too thrilled by the prospect of sitting in my desk chair watching the computer screen, so I needed to find a way to watch them from my comfortable sofa. Sure enough I researched and found there are ways to watch the internet through your TV. In fact if you have a newer TV and laptop it's a snap. Just need one cable and away you go. My TV, unfortunately, while new enough to receive a digital TV signal was not set up for such a thing as I bet a lot of sets out there right now are not in homes across the country. So I had to search for some way to bridge the connection between my TV and my laptop. There's quite a few options out there in the form of PC to TV converters. I chose a little more expensive model, a Grandtec PC to Component Video Converter, since I hoped that it would be the best quality and I knew I'd only have to pay for it one time vs month after month of payments.

The installation was very simple. I simply had to hook up the video cable and the monitor cable. I did have to purchase an extra cable to connect from my laptop to the TV for sound. Couldn't have been easier really. Now I just go to Hulu for example and pick from my favorite current TV programs to watch.

It's a lot like Tivo or DVR in that you don't worry about watching it on the network's schedule. So far it seems that every major network runs their shows online except for CBS which doesn't bother me that much since I have that one covered by part two of my plan with a regular outdoor digital antenna. I also watch cable TV content from the SyFy Channel and USA Network.  Also the internet sites allow me to watch a lot of classic TV shows like Flintstones, Jetsons, Newhart, Dick Van Dyke Show, Knight Rider, A-team, Outer Limits, Twilight Zone just to name a few.

Picked up an antenna for about 80 bucks, and while I did have some issues due to living in the boon docks, I now pick up
most of the local network channels and the Retro channel. The only downside is if you are a news hound you'll be missing Fox News channel, but if entertainment is what you pay the big bucks for every month, an antenna and a connection between your computer and your TV is all you need.

As far as negatives go, depending on where you live, getting your antenna set up might be a hassle while trying to get the best digital reception, and occasionally, when watching shows online, I notice issues with the shows coming across choppy which could be my laptop's memory, my internet connection, or the site itself getting bogged down with a lot of traffic. But for the price I'm paying every month I can't complain.

Obviously, please keep in mind, you need a high speed internet connection to make this work. A dial up isn't going to cut it. The bottom line is though, why pay twice for your entertainment, which is what you are doing if you pay for cable/satellite and your internet every month.
