Buying Second Hand Overhead Cranes
In today's testing times, construction, engineering and manufacturing companies need to look for ways to cut their overheads to stay afloat. By buying used overhead cranes, business owners can keep their costs down and their prices competitive.
Buying any equipment second hand is not without its risks. The quality of cranes can vary wildly – from almost new OTCs, to clapped out and rusting gear.
If you have seen a crane that suits your needs, it is wise to arrange for either yourself or a representative to visually inspect the machinery. If this initial assessment highlights any cause for concern, you should ensure that a full inspection is undertaken.
Even if you do not find any visible faults – cracks, areas of rust or noticeable strain on the spare parts – you will still need to see an in date test certificate. The LOLER (98) regulations require all lifting equipment to be adequately tested on a regular basis, and you should not pay for any lifting gear without evidence of regular maintenance.
If it is not possible to arrange an inspection of the crane in advance, ensure that you have a written agreement that allows you to return the equipment if it is in an unfit condition.
You should also consider the lifespan of any second hand overhead cranes that you buy. If the equipment is nearly at the end of its useful years of service, you may need to replace the lifting gear much sooner than you would like.
Ideally you should only buy an overhead crane that, with ongoing maintenance and proper use, will operate to its full potential for years to come.
Used overhead cranes can provide great cost savings to careful buyers. Keep your wits about you and you will find the right equipment at the right price.

Overhead Valve $58.94 High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles An overhead valve (OHV) engine, also informally called pushrod engine or Ihead engine, is a type of piston engine that places the camshaft within the cylinder block (usually beside and slightly above the crankshaft in a straight engine or directly above the crankshaft in the V of a V engine), and uses pushrods or rods to actuate rocker arms above the cylinder head to actuate the valves. Lifters or tappets are located in the engine block between the camshaft and pushrods. The later overhead camshaft (OHC) design avoids the use of pushrods by putting the camshaft in the cylinder head. Volvo Redblock Engine $60.54 High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles The Volvo B21 was a slant straight4 engine first used in the Volvo 200 series, meant to replace the B20. The B21 and all derived engines are often referred to as red block engines for the red paint applied to the block. The primary differences when compared to the B20 were the switch to a single overhead cam (SOHC) in place of the older pushrod configuration, and an aluminum crossflow cylinder head versus the iron head of the B20. Mitsubishi 3b2 Engine $81.25 High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles The Mitsubishi 3B2 engine is a family of allalloy three cylinder engines developed by Mitsubishi Motors, first produced in December 2005 at the companys Mizushima powertrain facility in Kurashiki, Okayama, for introduction in their 2006 Mitsubishi i kei car. All engines developed within this family have aluminum cylinder block and head, double overhead camshafts, four valves per cylinder, and MIVEC continuous variable valve timing. The preliminary version of the 659 cc engine was first seen in the i Concept test car introduced in 2003, and used Mitsubishis Smart Idling system which turns off the engine automatically when the vehicle is stationary, and can restart it within 0.2 seconds. So equipped, Mitsubishi claimed the prototype was capable of fulfilling the three litre initiative for gasoline engines, meaning fuel consumption of no more than 3.0 litres per 100 kilometres (94.2 mpg, 78.4 U.S. mpg). The larger 999 cc capacity of the development engine was outside the limits of the kei class in Japan, but it is to be reintroduced for the second generation of the Smart Fortwo. Opel Straight6 Engine $89.22 Please note that the content of this book primarily consists of articles available from Wikipedia or other free sources online. Opel used the straight6 engine configuration for many years, creating a major family of straight6 engines for the 1970s and 1980s. Opel used two straight6 engines prior to the betterknown modern family. The Opel Moonlight roadster was the first Opel vehicle with a straight6. It used a 1790 cc six in 1933. It was a 12valve engine with a veryundersquare 65.0 mm (2.6 in) bore and 90.0 mm (3.5 in) stroke, typical for the time. This engine produced 33.5 PS (33 hp/25 kW) and 100 N m (74 ft lbf). The 1956 Opel Kapit n was the next vehicle from the company with a straight6 engine. This was a 2605 cc unit with 12 overhead valves. Bore and stroke were now oversquare for high power output at 85.0 mm (3.3 in) by 76.5 mm (3 in). A single Opeldesigned carburetor and 7.8:1 compression yielded 91 PS (90 hp/67 kW) and 186 N m (137 ft lbf). Author: Surhone, Lambert M./ Tennoe, Mariam T./ Henssonow, Susan F. GM High Value Engine $78.07 The High Value engine family from General Motors is a group of Cam in Block or Overhead valve V6 engines. They use the same 60 vee bank as the 60 V6 family they are based on, but the new 99 mm (3.9 in) bore required offsetting the bores by 1.5 mm (0.1 in) away from the engine centerline. These engines (aside from the LX9) are the first cam in block engines to implement Variable Valve Timing, and won the 2006 Breakthrough Award from Popular Mechanics for this innovation. For the model year 2007 the 3900 engine features optional displacement on demand, or what is now called Active Fuel Management which can deactivate one bank of cylinders under light load to increase economy. It was rumored GM would produce a 3valve design, but never came to be. These engines are produced primarily at the GM UAW factory in Tonawanda, New York. Bmc ASeries Engine $70.1 High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles Austin Motor Companys small straight4 automobile engine, the ASeries, is one of the most common in the world. Launched in 1951 with the Austin A30, production lasted until 2000 in the Mini. It used a castiron block and cylinder head, and a steel crankshaft with 3 main bearings. The cylinder head for the overhead valve version of the Austin series A engine was designed by Harry Weslake a cylinder head specialist famed for his involvement in SS (Jaguar) engines and several F1 title winning engines. The ASeries design was licensed by Nissan of Japan, along with other Austin designs. That company quickly began modifying the ASeries, and it became the basis for many of the following Nissan engines. A version of the A Series engine was used as the auxiliary power unit on the British Centurion Main Battle Tank. AMC Straight6 Engine by Elmo, Timoteus [Paperback] $109.93 Please note that the content of this book primarily consists of articles available from Wikipedia or other free sources online. The American Motors Corporation (AMC) straight6 family of engines was used by a number of AMC and Jeep vehicles from 1964 through 2006. American Motors first straightsix engine was the 195.6 cu in (3.2 L). It was produced from 1958 through 1965 in both overhead valve (OHV) and flathead (Lhead) sidevalve versions. Sometimes referred to as the 196 engine, this engine was originally designed by Nash in the 1930s as a flathead, and redesigned as an OHV engine in 1956. The flathead version was discontinued for 19561957, but reemerged in 1958 as the economy engine for the new Rambler American. When the engine was changed to an OHV configuration the water pump was moved from the left side of the engine (driven by a shaft extending from the back of the generator) to the front above the timing chain. When the flathead model was reintroduced it also received the new water pump. Equipped with such high quality parts as forged crankshafts and connecting rods, these engines earned a reputation for remarkable durability.
