Temperature Changes and Hard Disk Failure

Hard disk failure occurs when logical or physical malfunction takes place. The logical malfunction happens because of issues like file system corruption, operating system failure, application corruption (like antivirus), malicious software and more. The physical failure takes place due to issues like read/write head damage, platters malfunction, actuator arm damage etc. Head crash is the main reason among all physical failure scenarios. It occurs when the read/write head comes in contact with the platters’ surface which can cause complete hard drive failure. As a fact, read/write head hovers at few micrometers height from platter surface. Apart from head crash, the common reasons causing physical failure are dust particles, humidity, excessive heat (like due to direct sunlight or fire) etc. Thus, to avoid Hard Disk Recovery in the near future, you should take all these factors into account while setting up your system hard drive(s). In a nutshell, you should ensure proper heat dissipation, no humidity and o

For example, sudden high temperature changes can cause hard disk failure as:

You shift your computer system from a cold environment to a moderately warmer environment or vice-versa.

Hard disk internals encounter sudden condensation

You turn on the system before condensation could evaporate

Disk platter surface material evaporate and read/write head get stuck with surface (It ultimately happens if the above process repeats again and again)

Hard disk fails and stops rotating

Thus, before turning the system on, hard disks should be given ample time so that the condensed droplets can evaporate. It entirely depends upon degree of temperature change ensued.
