Diagnosis Diagnostic

Diagnostic mammography – Imaging Techniques of Diagnosis

Breast cancer is something which is affecting women a lot these days. If we go by the statistics, then in US, one in every five women is developing breast cancer. This disease starts developing at the age of 50 years and above so diagnostic mammography is needed at primary stages.

However, breast cancer shows high cure rates and overall survival rates if detected early. Therefore, several countries are detecting new methods to cure this problem and help everyone. They are conducting mammography-screening programs, in addition to other means such as breast self-examination and clinical examinations, to help women in fighting this problem.

Mammography is one of the diagnostic imaging techniques, that uses small doses of radiation, which are delivered to the breast to generate breast tissues, that could point out if there is cancer or not.

Mammography has been the main technique used in breast cancer screening programs where women, in most of the programs; undergo one mammography scan each two years for women aged 50 to 75 years.

Regardless all these, diagnostic mammography has one drawback, and that is, that is has a range of false positive and false negative results. People are trying to discover other measures too to determine another medical imaging technique to carry on with the breast cancer screening programs.

For instance, Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is one of the suggested techniques to substitute mammography. Breast MRI provides better-detailed images that can aid doctors in detecting cancer in their patients.

Breast MRI has overcome a major problem that causes the false positive and negative results in mammography. Breast MRI can easily differentiate between a normal healthy but dense breast tissue and cancerous tissues.

Yet, there are several obstacles that hinder the use of breast MRI; the main issue is that MRI cost is much higher than diagnostic mammography. Also, MRI is not to be used on patients using pacemakers as the magnetic force generated during the procedure can interact with the pacemaker resulting in serious problem. Perhaps with the continuous studies, researchers would be able to provide communities with a new and better way to fight this killer disease.

Psychiatric Diagnosis

Psychiatric Diagnosis

$166

Psychiatric diagnosis is one of the most important topics within the broad field of psychiatry. Clear, accurate definitions of the various disorders are essential for clinicians around the world to be confident that they are classifying patients in the same way, thereby enabling comparisons of treatment regimens and their outcomes. There are two major classification systems in use, one produced by the World Health Organization, the WHO International Classification of Diseases, Mental Disorders Chapter, and one by the American Psychiatric Association, the well known Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders. Both of these are being revised so this book from the prestigious World Psychiatric Association is especially timely. In this book, leading experts in the field provide a broad and integrated coverage of the concepts, structure and context of psychiatric diagnosis. It begins by addressing mental health and illness around the world from historical, philosophical and cultural perspectives. Health is approached comprehensively, to include such aspects as resilience, resources and quality of life. The book then covers major specific psychopathology topics in Section II, including new categorizations and dimensional approaches. Section III concentrates on the complex problem of comorbidity, a primary challenge for modern diagnostic classifications in psychiatry. Finally, Section IV reviews emerging international diagnostic systems in psychiatry, considering innovative models and adaptations. This book will be essential reading for anyone involved in the diagnosis of psychiatric disorders.

Prenatal Diagnosis

Prenatal Diagnosis

$55.5

How can prenatal testing help your patients? In utero diagnosis has undergone an amazing revolution in recent years. More tests are available; the indications for prenatal diagnosis have expanded - you can now advise your patients about disorders you could not have previously detected. Medical training for obstetricians, medical geneticists, and genetic counselors has not kept pace with these developments. Clinical exposure to common and unusual problems in prenatal diagnosis is limited. Prenatal Diagnosis: Clinical Cases and Challenges , based on the authors’ several decades of experiences, fills this gap. Real cases portray diagnostic problems as a route to the underlying biology, the available testing options, and the results that might be obtained. The authors discuss the challenges of management, interpretation, and counseling. Cases used throughout emphasize three types of clinical problems: Chromosomal abnormalities Mendelian disorders Fetal structural abnormalities The decision to enter the world of prenatal diagnosis should be very carefully considered by any prospective mother. Prenatal Diagnosis: Clinical Cases and Challenges will help you discuss the issues in an informed manner with your patients.

The Neurologic Diagnosis

The Neurologic Diagnosis

$49.95

Neurology has been viewed as the study of the source of humanity. Personality, intelligence, and mood alterations are manifestations of brain function or dysfunction. Neurology has also been bedeviled with an unjustified assumption that diseases of the nervous system are observable but untreatable. This misconception has been handed down through generations of medical students because of the dearth of sufficient instruction in the early years of medical school. Furthermore, it is commonly asserted that neurologic diseases are uniquely incurable. This fallacious argument, often promulgated by poorly educated physicians, conveniently forgets that most illnesses are incurable. Only when physicians have been in practice for a few years do they recognize the importance of neurologic symptoms and their inability to analyze them. The Neurologic Diagnosis: Practical Strategies for Medical Students and Residents is an introductory text that simplifies the often unwieldy method of making a neurologic diagnosis. Medical students are often intimidated by a deluge of data, extensive differential diagnoses, and have no organizational structure to follow. Diagnostic techniques of general medicine are not applicable. Neurology is a unique specialty since it requires the intermediary step of an anatomic diagnosis prior to proffering a differential diagnosis. Yet the required knowledge of neuroanatomy need not be profound for the student who will specialize in any field other than neurology and neurosurgery. This text is directed to medical students and residents who will all be regularly faced with numerous patients who have neurologic symptomatology. Typical one-month neurology rotations out of four years of medical school is clearly inadequate training to make a cogent neurologic diagnosis, especially since subsequent instruction is commonly provided by upper level residents who have the same background and numerous misconceptions. This is not a comprehensive text. The emphasis in this concise and practical title is on establishing a neuroanatomic diagnosis before formulating a differential diagnosis. In addition, treatment is seldom discussed since it is likely to change radically over time. Focused and succinct, The Neurologic Diagnosis: Practical Strategies for Medical Students and Residents is an invaluable resource for medical students and residents interested in the practice of neurological diagnosis.

Glaucoma Diagnosis

Glaucoma Diagnosis

$50

To the best of our knowledge, the 1st Global AIGS Consensus Meeting on "Structure and Function in the Management of Glaucoma" was also the first global consensus meeting in ophthalmology. The goal was to reach an evidence-based consensus for both clinical practice and research through the use of information obtained from peer-reviewed literature describing functional and structural diagnostic testing in glaucoma. The faculty and review group consisted of leading global authorities on glaucoma diagnostic testing. The preparation for the Consensus was unique in its format (see page xii). Reports on the individual methods of Structure and Function were prepared by an expert group. This was followed by intra-function and intra-structure comparisons and, finally, by a comparison of structure versus function. All the reports were placed in the Consensus e-Room, where they could be commented on by all participants. In addition, basic aspects of this Consensus were considered, as well as the important issue of Evidence-Based Diagnosis. This intense preparation was needed in order to obtain a preliminary Consensus before the meeting. The final Consensus was formulated, based on the preliminary report and adapted following comments from the discussions. It is recognized by all who participated that this is a fluid topic, which will change considerably as further research is conducted and new knowledge is gained.

Diagnosis as Cultural Practice

Diagnosis as Cultural Practice

$125

Diagnosis isn't what it seems. It is usually treated as a label, arrived at by professionals, to explain a problem and to point to treatment. This view of diagnosis fits the medical model. Authors in this book view diagnosis as a process, not a label. Diagnosis involves a negotiation of power relationships as well as of professional accountability. The chapters reveal how today's professionals and non-professionals use diagnosis to explain medical problems and also to explore how a diagnosis affects the identities of those diagnosed. In addition, some chapters show how diagnostic reasoning occurs in unexpected contexts such as when writing letters of recommendation and talking about communication. Together, a diverse array of authors from various backgrounds, highlight the many ways that diagnosis is deeply rooted in today's culture.

Clinical Reasoning and Diagnostic Expertise

Clinical Reasoning and Diagnostic Expertise

$167.53

Diagnosis and its underlying clinical reasoning are central to medical practice. Formerly, both doctors and patients alike tended to view diagnosis as an art, an intuitive ability that could not be taught but that emerged only after extensive clinical experience. However in these days of public accountability, the ability of doctors to properly understand and diagnose patient problems is more crucial than ever. Concern for patient safety has led healthcare providers to campaign strongly to reduce levels of patientrelated adverse events. Once, these were viewed as a regrettable but mostly unavoidable consequence of the uncertainty inherent in medicine. But the evidence is that many are highly preventable. In particular, the level of diagnostic error, the second largest cause of adverse events overall, highlights both the importance of the diagnostic process in medical care and the need for universities and medical educators to graduate doctors with strong diagnostic and clinical reasoning skills. This work explores the nature, role in diagnosis and development of clinical reasoning, and looks to apply the insights gained to undergraduate and postgraduate medical education.
