4 Reasons Why Bush Office Furniture is Green
Bush Industries, which manufactures Bush office furniture, celebrated its 50th birthday this year. They are a company that has been successful because they have continued to grow and be an industry leader in many ways. Their growth is primarily reflected in the fact that they have both Bush Furniture North America and Bush Furniture Europe. And in their North America arm, they have multiple manufacturing locations. As an industry leader, their innovation is seen in many areas, including their entertainment, home and business office divisions. Not only do they have innovative design, but they strive to be a leader by being environmentally conscience.
Let's take a look at some of the ways that Bush office furniture can be considered 'green' in today's environmentally aware world.
- Almost all Bush office furniture begins with recycled wood fiber. But, not only do they start with recycled material, they also recycle or reuse much of their factory byproducts instead of letting it go to waste.
That's nice, but how do they recycle their byproducts? That is what I always wonder when I hear about companies recycling, and often I am amazed at how those byproducts are used. Much of Bushes leftover byproducts are wood chips and sawdust. Among other things, these are used as boiler fuel and cow bedding on local farms. Other examples of reuse is that they strip down any old pieces of manufacturing equipment for parts, and they make its own pallets from factory scraps.
- Bush Industries strives to be very away of their energy use and has taken initiatives to cut it wherever possible. This includes upgrading to more energy efficient equipment, after hours lighting (this is good, seeing bright lights at night in a closed business does not make sense!), 24 hour temperature controls, and regular weekly energy audits to help identify and then fix energy waste.
- As with all their products, Bush realizes the importance of sustainability (conserving an ecological balance by avoiding depletion of natural resources) and makes it a critical part of their design process. Bush office furniture is designed to minimize waste creation, both in the product and in shipping material. One example of this is the use of a high performance stretch wrap that results in a 25% reduction of wrap used.
- Bush office furniture and their other US made products are manufactured in an Environmentally Preferable Product (EPP) Downstream Licensed Facility. To qualify for this certification, at least 50% of the CPM (composite panel materials such as particleboard, MDF and hardboard) used is certified as an environmentally preferable product.
More and more consumers today are concerned about the environment. Though most people will not refuse to buy an item that does not come from an environmentally conscience company, they will prefer the environmentally conscience company over one that's not. I have noticed this in myself when shopping. Last January I was shopping for a new office chair. The companies that gave evidence of environmental efforts in their manufacturing were at the top of my list of chairs to consider. Those environmental efforts tipped the scale in their favor. Besides the benefits to the environment, it says that a company is concerned about more than just their bottom dollar, they are willing to make efforts in other areas to make the world better. And that effort is one thing that makes Bush office furniture stand out from others.
