Quantum Leap Towards The Future Computer" Said Australian Scientists
A team led by Australian scientists have taken a big step in the race to develop a quantum computer based on computer.Quantum exploit the laws of quantum physics – laws that apply to particles smaller than atoms – to get a computer to perform many calculations simultaneously.
Previous studies have focused on how to use light, or materials other than silicon, quantum of work computers.But team, led by engineers from the University of New South Wales and University of Melbourne, has studied the properties of electrons embedded in silicon, which is cheaper, better understood, and is the basis for most electronics today.
To build a quantum computer, researchers must be able to write data to an electron changing its spin state, and read information by measuring its spin.In an article published today in Nature, scientists say they have cracked the second part of this conundrum by creating a device that measures the spin state of a single electron in one atom of phosphorus in a silicon block.
"What we have shown in this paper in Nature is the ability to read, when the electron is in a random state," said co-says Dr Andrea Morello.
