Is A Countertop Ice Maker Worth The Money?

Are you thinking about purchasing a countertop ice maker, but not sure if it's worth the
investment?
With prices from $119.00 to over $300.00 these can be among the more expensive kitchen gadgets on the market, and this is the reason why - it's the compressor.
The compressor is the heart of any ice maker. Most are now CFC-free (no chlorofluoro carbons), and they can all produce a small batch of ice within a few minutes. These little freezer-pumps are actually very complex and account for a large part of your purchase price.

The more expensive countertop ice makers come with features such as timers, self-cleaning,
hose attachments that will eliminate the need to manually fill the reservoirs, recycling for turning the water into more cubes, (instead of having to draining the excess), and adaptors for using bottled water.

But the real question here is "Is the ice worth the price?"

We'd never considered a countertop ice maker until our neighbor bought one for their RV.
It made sense for them because the refridgerator they have in it looks slightly larger than a toaster, and buying ice-by-the-bag on their trips was inconvenient. They justified their purchase by guessing that the ice maker would pay for itself in less than 1 year.

Well, we have a large family and entertain a lot, so we have a tendancy to run out of ice and buy it by the bag sometimes too.
We have to tote ice from the fridge to our mini-bar upstairs. And it would be great for our cook-outs, and to use on our houseboat...you bet we could justify it!

My sister-in-law has a small accounting firm. As the company has grown, the mini-fridge in the breakroom can't produce the ice needed for the employees and the clients that come in for consultations.
After seeing ours, she justified buying a countertop ice maker as a 'business expense'.

So is a countertop icemaker worth the money?

Well, you could use a carefully thought out analysis of 'cost vs. convenience' and come to a reasonable decision
that way.
Or you could do what we did - pretend it makes perfect sense, buy one, and enjoy it!
