Using An Ultrasonic Thickness Gauge

Ultrasonic Thickness Measurement (UTM) is the method through which the local thickness of any solid metallic or other element may be measured without the use of an invasive or destructive procedure. The means of measurement is based wholly upon the time taken for an ultrasound wave to return to the surface of the element.

Such an operation is ordinarily performed by using an ultrasonic thickness gauge. Because ultrasonic waves travel through metals at a constant speed that varies only according to the consistency of the alloy under inspection, the time taken for the wave to reach the surface is usually a reasonably accurate indicator of the thickness of the metal.

Apart from the fact that this technique does not destroy or damage the element being tested, it also has the advantage of not being dependent on access from both sides of the sample. One point of contact and source of measurement is adequate to obtain an accurate reading.

Account is also taken of any coatings or coverings that the sample may have, plus of course accurate recordings do not depend upon the existence of laboratory conditions.

The principle of using ultrasound as a means of measurement is the same as is that which is applied as a diagnostic tool to monitor the development of an human foetus.

Ultrasonic Thickness Measurement is sometimes used as a means of monitoring metal thickness in industrial settings or through underwater inspection. Technicians equipped with a portable ultrasonic thickness meter reach steel plating in sides, decks, tanks and the superstructure. They can ascertain its thickness by touching the steel with the transducer, or measurement head.

Usually contact is ensured by first removing any visible corrosion, and then applying petroleum jelly before pressing the probe firmly against the metal. This simple procedure is used to inspect metal so as to determine quality and safety without destroying or compromising the integrity of the sample.
