Chisel Tooth Chains

There are two types of chisel teeth in chain saw chains. Each is defined by their shape and the shape of the file used to sharpen them. Chain saw chains are classified on number, spacing and angle of their teeth.

 

Types of teeth

 

Chisel Tooth

The chisel tooth is also called square tooth or flat top and is very square with a flat back and flat top. The chisel tooth chain is generally ideal for sawmilling softwoods. This type can be used on three different kinds of chains.

 

 

Semi-chisel Tooth

The semi-chisel tooth is a less aggressive cutter than the chisel tooth. Use a round file and file guide to sharpen a semi-chisel chain. The semi-chisel tooth is also more tolerant of dirt and dust, and stays sharp longer.

 

Types of Chains

 

Standard Chain

The standard chain is also called full house because it has the most teeth. Chisel teeth in a standard chain can be positioned at a35-degree angle for a smooth cut. This chain is known as a crosscut chain. The Oregon rip chain has teeth set at a 10-degree angle to create a smoother cut than the crosscut.

 

Semi-Skip Chain

On a semi-skip chain, half of the teeth are close together, like in a full house. The other half is full skip. The semi-skip chain's cutter sequence features one left hand cutter, two tie straps, one right hand cutter, followed by one tie strap, for the entire length of the chain.

 

Full-skip chain

Compared to a standard chain, a full-skip chain has half the number of teeth; also, all are evenly spaced. The full-skip chain needs a big saw to drive it. And, since it has fewer teeth than the standard chain, the full-skip chain requires more power to produce a rough lumber cut with it.

 

Chain maintenance

Naturally, the most important parts of a chain saw are the chain and the bar. It is important to keep the teeth sharp and the bar clean to make cutting with it much easier. Keeping these two parts in good working condition also puts a lot less pressure on the chain saw motor and less effort for you to use this tool. At some point, the chain will need to be replaced. How long a chain lasts depends on how often you use it and what you cut it with. Chains can be purchased pre-cut lengths in rolls of 100 feet.
