OBD scan stands for on-board diagnostics scan. It was initially intended for the purpose of automobile emission tracking in order to enforce vehicle emission standards. One of the most exciting improvements in the automotive industry was the addition of the OBD (On Board Diagnostics). It is the computer that activates the vehicle's "CHECK ENGINE" light. OBD1 (OBD I) was designed to monitor manufacture-specific systems on cars from 1981 to 1995. Then came the development of OBD2 (OBD II), which is on all 1996 and newer cars sold in the U.S. Like it's predecessor, OBD2 (OBD II) was adopted as part of a government mandate to lower vehicle emissions.
