Blue Urethane Basecoat

I love decorative vases! They are great for placing flower arrangements and simply by grouping together different shape and color vases, you can create a decorative element in any room.

There are two basic types of paper mache: the strip type and the pulp type. For this project we're using the pulp type.

Here's what you need:

• paper mache pulp.

• plastic container

• dust mask

• oval or round glass vase in any size you like

• poster paint or any water based paint such as acrylic or vinyl-acrylic house paint

• 2" paint brush

• #14 paint brush

• water based polyurethane or varnish

There are several different brands of commercial paper mache pulp available in craft and art stores. I like Celluclay for it's consistence and also because it doesn't have unwanted additives, which makes it heavy and tend to harden too quickly.

Celluclay is a dry paper pulp and all you have to do is mix it with water (follow the instructions on the package). To do this I recommend wearing a dust mask because the fibers have the tendency to "dust" upward, and it may get into your nostrils.

Once you have it mixed, roll it out between two layers of wax paper with a rolling pin to interlace the fibers. This step is not necessary but it will result in a very strong material.

Remove the layers of wax paper and store the paper mache paste in a plastic container.

Now to the fun part: take small portions of the paper mache paste and press it against the vases' surface patching them together until covering it all. You can do this in a way that creates texture by taping lightly with your fingers or you can create high/low relief by pressing your finger tips on the paper mache creating any desired patterns.

Once you've done that, place it on a well ventilated area and allow for it to dry completely. Drying time could take anywhere from several hours to a couple of days depending on how well ventilated the area is and how dry the air is.

Next step is to choose a pallet with 4 to 5 five colors. You can choose a:

• warm pallet with reds, golds and browns

• cool pallet with blues, greens and yellows

• neutral pallet with browns, blacks and beiges

• tonal pallet wit h 4 to 5 different shades of the same color

When it is totally dry you can start painting by giving it a base coat of the lightest color in your pallet with the 2" brush. Once it's dry, using the #14 brush keep applying the different colors sparsely, from lighter to darker, using a dry brush technique. The idea is to create clusters of colors all over in a pleasing pattern.

Make sure you allow some time between applying the different colors so that they don't blend too much and you're still able to visually differentiate them.

For those who don't know what a dry brush technique is, it's a technique where you dip the brush on the paint, take the excess off on a paper towel and then run the brush on the surface you're painting.

To protect your work finish it up with two coats of polyurethane or varnish allowing drying time in between coats.

The end result is a very unique vase with a rich depth of colors and textures, a heavy look of an exotic ceramic vase with the practical advantage of being light weighted and easy to manipulate.

And voila -- a fabulous vase!
