The Quickening Gyre- How Marketers Fall Short on Targeting Intelligence

I was looking at some law firms and some research data that showed how law firms, that wouldn't be able to benefit from social media very much, and thus, wouldn't have a lot of vertical information to crawl out on the net so targeting intelligence is pretty much a no-go for them, become competitively intelligent. The findings all indicated that many many many companies, around 75% or 3/4ths of all that were surveyed, already have some type of competitive intelligence program. Now it may not necessarily be a formal competitive intelligence program but there is some semblance or research being done to investigate all available information on their competitors.

Now the interesting thing is how many tools lawyers use to leverage that kind of information. How many do we, as marketers use? When I took a look at that I was struck with how little we actually know about the marketplace. As for customers- we know who we want to buy our stuff, we generally know where they are, and for the most part, we know why they buy. That much is certain. The other areas? Not so much. Let's break it down, shall we?

Influencers: We have absolutely no idea of priority. We don't know who our target buyers refer to. We have little information on the channels that the influencers use to be "influential" and we have a very long list of potential influencers to market to, with no way to filter out the ones that matter automatically.

Competitive: Most companies are completely in the dark about rival activity online. They don't know where they are spending their money in regards to digital and socialmedia buys. And no companies really know what influencers are for or against their competition.

The thing is both those areas are easily fixable with targeting intelligence. And even your customer intelligence can be manifold with such an aid. Why stay in the dark?
