As a general rule, vehicles traveling on roads need to be stable enough to be maneuvered around. This stability issue assumes prime importance in case the vehicle is large or traveling at high speeds. An unstable vehicle can turn turtle while cornering either due to its weight or due to even the slightest maneuver of the wheels while at high speeds. To counter these problems, vehicle manufacturers use tuned suspensions on every wheel of the vehicle. An effective suspension allows just the right amount of flex in the shock absorbers negating any vibrations caused by moving on the road while being stiff enough to balance the vehicle's weight.

 

Usually suspensions on all four wheels of a vehicle are independent of each other but sometimes there is a need to connect two suspensions located on either side of the vehicle. That need arises when either the vehicle is large and heavy or capable of high speeds. For this reason, the suspensions of vehicles like heavy and light trucks, 4x4s, SUVs, ATVs and sports cars come with an extra standard fitment that is called a Strut Bar. A horizontal strut bar has also evolved as an aftermarket addition to normal cars in the name of performance enhancement however that is still a debatable statement.

 

A horizontal Strut Bar as an addition to the normal McPherson Struts is nothing but a metal bar connecting two independent suspensions that are located on either side of the vehicle. It can either be added between two front suspensions or between two rear ones or both however it cannot be added to join the front suspension to the rear suspension. The main idea behind adding a strut bar to two opposite suspensions is to reduce their flex and thus make the vehicle more stable by reducing sideways swerve. A strut bar also balances the extra weight of the vehicle while cornering. Having said that, the stiff support offered by a strut bar can also have its negative effects.

 

A stiff suspension will surely reduce drive comfort since more vibrations from uneven road surfaces can be felt inside the car cabin. Prolonged vibrations are known to decrease the life of other parts of the vehicle. Also, added weight of struts can reduce gas mileage. Hence, it is advisable to use a strut bar in a vehicle that really needs it and that means not in normal small cars. A strut bar however is of extreme importance in sports cars and heavy vehicles.

 

In case your vehicle is in need of a strut bar, do not hesitate to get one fitted as soon as possible. It will save you from a lot of hassles. Since a strut bar is made of flexible, high quality and durable metal, it costs an awful lot. One wonders how could a piece of metal cost that much but that sadly is the reality. Buy a brand new OEM strut bar from the dealer and it is even more expensive. In such a situation, one wonders if there can be any alternatives.

 

Well, there is one. Used OEM strut bars are inexpensive, original and durable when compared to rebuilt and aftermarket parts. These are from a vehicle of same make and model as yours so there is no question whether they will fit properly or not.
