It went on sale in 1994, shortly after the A6 designation was introduced, replacing the 100 nameplate. The original S6 (Ur S6) was largely the same car as the outgoing, original Audi S4 (C4) (UrS4), with the only visible differences being new bodycladding and badging. It was developed alongside the open Audi R8R spyder, prior to being replaced by the allnew Audi R8 in 2000. At the time of Audis announcement of their intention to enter the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1998, the initial plan was to enter an open cockpit prototype, known as the Audi R8R. However, following the dominant performance of GT1class cars in the 1998 24 Hours of Le Mans, the Automobile Club de lOuest (ACO) modified classification rules in order to create a new class known as LMGTP, which would be closedcockpit prototypes, realistically replacing the powerful, purposebuilt GT1 cars. Following this rule change, Audi decided that they should invest in this new LMGTP class, thus forcing them to design a whole new car, vastly different from the R8R. It is essentially the twodoor coupe and cabriolet versions of the fourth generation A4 (B8) saloon and Avant. Audi bills the model as a grand tourer, to compete against the likes of the BMW E92 and BMW E93(BMW 3Series coupe and convertible) and the MercedesBenz EClass Coupe.
