What Is A Scan Tool In Automotive Industry?

Scan tools are very necessary for auto-diagnostics nowadays. Indicator lights which represent parts of the cars respectively give the owner or the mechanic a signal to check the corresponding meaning of the codes shown by the device. Before scan tools such as the OBD II were created, car diagnostics is being done by jumping or grounding specific terminals of the diagnostic interface of the car. Flashes of lights which are long or short flashes tell the mechanic about the problem of the vehicle by interconnecting the flashes with the corresponding code. However, it was very troublesome to do auto-diagnostics in a traditional way because deciphering the flashes of lights is very complicated. In cases that the vehicle has two or more codes, it is very difficult to determine when one code initializes and when one the other ends. The good thing is that scan tools such as the OBD II were invented and they helped the mechanics get rid of the manual flash codes and replace it with a digital code reader.

The scan tool can access and display several codes. There are very basic models that are only capable of displaying numeric entries and the expensive ones give corresponding definitions of the codes in several languages. In addition, a scan tool is also capable of clearing codes in order for the MIL to be turned off. It is also a common mistake that code reader is being interchanged with a scan tool. We need to establish the distinction these two because they are totally different even though they are related in terms of functions. The code reader merely read and clear codes while the scan tool is capable of displaying data from the sensor and other operation-related information. The scan tool is much better since that it is built for advanced diagnostics.

However, code reader as well scan tools can only do limited functions for your vehicles. There are things that amateurs usually thinks that scan tools and code readers could perform but could actually not. For instance, these could only give the mechanic a signal if a damage or trouble has been detected but do not indicate replacements of specific parts. These two only function to help you do the first step in solving your car's trouble. This is in contrast to the belief of some that scan tools and code readers are the only things they need in order to identify and repair the problems of their vehicles.

Furthermore, there are also several types of scan tools and chilton auto repair manual. There is the entry level or generic scan tool and the professional level scan tools. The former is much cheaper than the latter. The entry level scan tools are flexible and may work on most American car brands but might require additional software installations for those that came from Asia and Europe. In addition, entry level scan tools can only display limited performance information data or PIDs. Meanwhile, the professional level or advanced scan tools are capable of conducting things that scan tools and Chevrolet Repair Manual from OEM factory can do. They can also show most if not all PIDs.

More expensive tools of course offer better features and services but if you do not have enough money then the entry level would be a practical choice. Besides, what is really important is that you somehow have the means to diagnose the problem with your car before it could worsen.
