The History of Lunch Bags

The lunch bag has become a very useful item in many households in the United States. Everyone from moms to kids to dads to office workers carry a lunch box because it is a convenient way of keeping, well, their lunch. You can find a myriad of them for purchase but the most popular ones have been custom lunch bags.

The lunch bag, otherwise known as a lunch pail, a lunch kit or a lunch box is a container where you can store your food for mealtimes, whether for work or at school. The lunch bag has some really interesting beginnings. The idea of a food container has been long time established but around the 20th century, meals were being hauled in tobacco tins and this sparked the idea of turning it into a marketable product in the eyes of the manufacturers, who saw that these containers were pretty popular among the youth.

Historically, they were more often used by schoolchildren who often took their home cooked meals and snacks to school. They have evolved over time, and you can even find custom lunch bags that enable you to have your own design on. The most basic form have evolved into the modern Lunch Bags we so commonly see are those that look like mini brief cases with a clasp and a handle for easy carrying.

They are often designed in colorful colors with colorful images and sayings and designs that are generic or follow a certain cartoon show, film or children's television show. The modern ones were first produced by using lithographed metal way back in the 1950s, 1960s, 1970s and 1980s. This method gave way to custom lunch bags in the 1990s that used injection molded plastic.

This method gave way to a more cost effective way called the insulated vinyl filled with foam and has generated the production of lunch bags using various materials from plastic to vinyl which are the most common materials used. These types were normally used for kids whereas for adults, tin or aluminum was commonly used. The reason was that adults needed a more durable lunch bag compared to kids.

With its very early beginnings, they still remain popular and still become the 'mode of transportation' for our food. With its never ending popularity, lunch bags can be found customized into various shapes, sizes, colors and designs that can suit the many different tastes of people.
