Aluminum Tool Topbox

When my children were young, it seemed we were always giving gifts to others. This gift giving often meant me going to the store, buying a gift, wrapping the gift and then signing my child's name to the gift. I soon realized no part of this gift giving was from my child.

There are so many gifts you can make with the help of your child that will make gift giving truly from the child. I'd like to share some ideas:

1. Give a decorative jar. You can buy empty jars at the local craft store. The last jar I received was decorated with puffy paint. I love it. It's been in my bathroom since I received it. You can also use a thick paper such as scrapbook paper and wrap the paper around the jar. These are things your child can help you pick out and decorate.

2. If your child is a little older, make your own calendar. If the gift is for a teacher, see if you can get some photos from the previous year or even the current year. Now get thicker white paper. Create the month of January with a photo on the back. This photo would be visible when February is up. On the back of February, insert another photo, which would be visible when March is showing and so on. You can color copy the photos onto paper or create a scrapbook type page using the original photos. You can also do this for a Girl Scout leader or sports coach. Everyone loves calendars. December is the perfect time to make these for the new year.

3. Is your child old enough to help in the kitchen? Homemade breads, cakes and other baked goods can make a wonderful gift to someone who is happy to receive the homemade treats. You can wrap the items in cellophane and use decorative ribbons to accent the wrapping.

4. Have you ever made jewelry? I know many people who love to make jewelry with beads they find at the craft store or at local craft shows. Your child can help choose the beads and also help string the beads. Jewelry is a gift most people enjoy receiving.

5. Making a craft or tool kit as a gift can also be fun. I love to use the plastic containers with several compartments. I think of them as fishing tackle boxes. You can then pick out the craft supplies or tools that will go into each compartment. Your child can decorate the top of the box with markers or puffy paint.

6. A hand-decorated reusable tote bag. The ideas on decorating these are endless. You can include the handprints from children or you can paint and draw on them. This is a gift that will be used over and over again.

These are just six ideas for homemade gifts that your children can help you make. Receiving a handmade personal gift is so heart warming. See if you can come up with even more ideas.
