Fight and Beat Bad Morning Breath Starting Today

We've all had a case of bad breath in the morning, also known as morning breath. If you've never noticed it yourself you may have noticed it on your partner, or your partner may have noticed it on you, or you may have noticed a colleague had it at one of those morning meetings you just love to go to!

For some of us bad morning breath is only a temporary problem, gone once we take that first glass of water in the morning. The reason for bad morning breath is that during the night our mouth dries out, and there is very little movement of our mouth. The bacteria and the food particles they feed on stagnate there.

I'll bet you want to know what to do about it, right?

I'll give you three things you can do beginning this evening. Heck, you can do them right now!

1. Right before bedtime, brush your teeth. Brush your teeth for two minutes at least.

2. Right before bedtime clean your tongue. I recommend you clean your tongue every time you brush your teeth. Especially the back of the tongue. You can use your toothbrush, brushing from back to front, or you can use a tongue scraper.

3. If you wake up in the middle of the night, drink a little water, to help wash away the stuff that's accumulating on your tongue, and moisten your throat. Your stomach will take care of it.

If you have had an alcoholic beverage in the evening this can dry out your mouth later. Make sure before you go to bed you brush your teeth and clean your tongue. You may want to have a little water during the night.

For your morning practice, brush your teeth, floss, clean your tongue with either your toothbrush or a tongue scraper, and use a non-alcoholic mouthwash, or perhaps a solution of hydrogen peroxide with water, or a little baking soda in water. Any and all of these can help to alleviate morning breath.

How It Happens

During the night the production of saliva slows down or even stops. There's much less tongue movement. And because generally we breathe through our nose there is less air flowing through our mouth. In these very calm conditions the bacteria that live in our mouth will thrive.

These bacteria cause volatile sulfur compounds. These are anaerobic bacteria, which means that they do not require oxygen to live on. They produce energy by the process of fermentation. Some of the products of fermentation include volatile sulfur compounds that cause bad morning breath.

The majority of anaerobic bacteria will be found at the very back of the tongue. This is a place where it is dark, it's dry and there's not a lot of oxygen. In addition dead tongue skin cells, food deposits, and mucus all can accumulate there. The surface of the back of the tongue is also a rough texture, where the bacteria can nestle into and breed. They then create a coating of food particles, mucous, and plaque, and can live underneath the coating right there on the surface of your tongue. You can see this yellowish or whitish coating on the back of your tongue if you take a good look.

Take a look in the morning. Stick your tongue all the way out, and look at the back of it.

That's probably a lot more than you wanted to know about bad morning breath, isn't it?

Bad morning breath can be reduced or eliminated by practicing some or all of the techniques I've given here. If you practice these techniques and have good oral hygiene, and you still have bad morning breath, you may want to see your dentist or your doctor to find out more.
