Fire Proof Sealant Explained

FIRE PROOF SEALANTS EXPLAINED

There has been increased demand for fire rated sealants and foams due to the ever increasing changes to building regulations covering passive fire protection.

Strict fire testing has to conform to the new European EN1366-4 standard, this has now replaced BS476 part 20.

Most new builds now incorporate a high level of fire protection into the structure. Generally the level of fire safety increases with the number of people who access or occupy the building.

The function of fire rated sealants is to seal joints and gaps in and around fire rated wall, floor or partitions.

Intumescent sealants perform an imperative function as a fire wall is only as effective as its weak point. There are various Areas that will require fire sealing, for instance joints between dry wall partitions and the interface with other elements of the building, gaps at the perimeter of the dry wall partitions, around door and window frames. There are a wide variety of applications, See below for a quick summary:

Intumescent Fire Rated Acrylics Sealants 

Intumescent Acrylics is the most commonly used sealants for internal use particularly on dry wall systems. They are designed to swell when exposed to high temperatures (above 125°C) this   enables both fire protection and provides a smoke seal. They are also commonly used to seal gaps around fire boarding to steel structures as well as sealing around internal partitions, where a fire and smoke seal in a prerequisite in exit passageways. s

Fire Foams, Fire Resistant Sealants.

There are two levels of protection available, B1 giving the highest protection level and B2 the lowest.

Expanding foams are ideal in ensuring gaps are fully filled and therefore correctly fire protected.

Intumescent Acoustic Sealants And Adhesive

These products have been developed for the dry lining industry and can be used as a board adhesive and a joint sealant. The fire rating is the same as standard intumescent acrylic sealant however they also have adhesive and acoustic properties.

There is a full range of intumescent acrylic and fire rated silicones that conform to EN 1366-4 and achieve up to five hours fire resistance on today's market. Some sealants are tested using standard PE backer rod and some use mineral wool as a backing material. 

Fire testing specialists say using a PE backer rods show the sealants performance better than the tests using the mineral wool.

Fire Rated Sealants And Silicones Rated Silicones

Designed to be used in construction and expansion joints where a high level of movement occurs, for silicones are always based on a neutral curing system which enables maximum adhesion to concrete and similar porous substrates. These can be used both internally and externally.
