Do it Yourself (DIY) Electric Car - No More Trips to the Gas Station

It is cheaper to run and cost less to maintain. No more trips to the local gasoline station to fill up the tank. Back in mid 2008 when gas prices were at their highest, stopping by the pump station was an expensive ordeal. Many people simply could not afford it and had to abandon their vehicles at home and use public transportation. Even though a pure electric car has many advantages, the drawback is its high cost. Because the demand for EV is not really big, the manufacturers are unable to reach an economy of scale to bring the cost down. For the time being, the only option we can take is to convert a gas driven car to run on electricity through a Do It Yourself (DIY) project from home.

The concept of a homemade electric car is actually quite simple. The idea is to hoist out the internal combustion engine (ICE) and replaces it with a DC electric motor. Any electric motor with 90 horse power and above will do just find for an EV.

The propel the car forward, the motor is connected directly to the existing transmission unit. The only part that has to be custom made is the metal adapter plate. The plate will be used to line up the motor and transmission shafts. A universal coupler will then be used to link the 2 cores together.

To power the electric motor, you can use lead acid batteries for your conversion project. This kind of battery is readily available and does not cost a lot. However, a normal sedan EV will need to use 10 to 15 units of battery. To save cost, you can use old reconditioned battery from electric golf carts.
